Small Squishy Spaces

I’m sitting here at a conference, and one of the things that I notice is how close the chairs are together. If you don’t fit the standard size of person, you need an end to be comfortable. I’m straddling at the end, with one leg under the table, and yet anotehr around it.

Someone in a wheelchair had to pull in at a weird angle so she could use her computer. If you don’t fit a standard mold, people “forget” you may need extra space.

Who thinks of you?

Have you ever been to Lane Bryant or Catherines? They have nice large fitting rooms. They allow for extra size. Go into some bathrooms, and they consider you, others you’re wedged in there tight! Public bathrooms can be frustrating, because some are so small and tight, your hip is jammed against the toilet paper holder.

Experienced this? The door swings in but there’s the little waste disposal can and toilet paper holders on the wrong side, so you have to like go all the way in..squish to the back just so you can open or close the door? Yikes…hello, please remember plus size people when you design these things. It’s not like there’s just one or two of us. I’m not even really, really plus size, so if I’m squeezing in, what about people who are larger than myself? No fair to them…they deserve the same situation as everyone else. Please start consider plus sized people when you design a bathroom. Don’t make me go into the handicap stall because it’s bigger and accomodates me better. I’m not handicapped, I don’t want to hold up that particular stall…but I want to not have to be all jammed into a tiny stall.
