All Dress April 2018 – Week Four & Five

All Dress April

All Dress April

I really wanted to have this posted way before now, but this past weekend really took a lot out of me. I feel like that is the story of my life, but I am doing the best I can with my life circumstances. I think a lot of you get that, and maybe that is why you have stuck with me as readers of this blog. My life isn’t always Instagram perfect and I am going to be real about that.

But let’s focus on the positive. We are here now, and I am finally able to focus and am back to a semi livable energy level. So let’s talk about what I wore the last two weeks of All Dress April. I bunched the fifth week in with week four since week five was only two days long.

If you haven’t seen the previous weeks and want to get caught up, make sure to check out week one, week two, and week three.

Day 22

Wearing Forever21 Plus on day 22 of All Dress April

On day 22 my outfit is from Forever21.

The top is their Off-the-Shoulder Lettuce-Edge Crop Top. It is not a super short crop top, and since I have the skirt raised higher, you wouldn’t even be able to tell its a crop top. But this particular style from Forever21 Plus does work really well for those of us with larger busts.

The skirt is also from Forever21, it is their Scuba Maxi Skirt in Black and White. This however it is currently sold out. They do have some other items in black and white that you may want to consider. Check out the Striped Wide Leg Pants, Striped Scuba Knit Skirt, and the Faux Leather Striped Mini Skirt.

Day 23

I missed this day.

Day 24

Day 24 of All Dress April and I am wearing Reb Dolls

This is from Rebdolls. It is their “Rumor Has It” Maxi Skater Set in White. There is only a couple of sizes left in this set, so if you are interested, check it out quickly.

This was my first time ordering from Rebdolls, but I was pleasantly surprised at the size range and quality of what was offered. I did purchase one other item, which you will see soon hopefully. And I believe this won’t be my last time ordering from them, so more in the future.

Day 25

Wearing Simply Be for day 25 of All Dress April

On day 25 I decided to wear another Simply Be dress. And this one is still available. It is their Embroidered Stud Mesh Dress. I have it paired with some Aerosoles Pumps that I have had for a long time.

Day 26

On Day 26 of All Dress April I am wearing head to toe Amazon available items.

I think my outfit from day 26 was the most popular on social media out of all of my looks from the month, or at least it got the most comments and requests for the links. I purchased this look to wear to Pride this year, and I thought I would share it with all of you ahead of time. This look, head to toe, is available for purchase on Amazon.

The dress is the Summer Fashion Plus Size Rainbow Print Sleeveless A-Line Mini Dress. I am in a size 3XL. I do think the dress runs true to their size chart, or possibly a little large. The fabric does have a lot of stretch.

I have it paired with:

My unicorn shoes were in white, but unfortunately they don’t have that color left anymore.

Day 27

Day 27 of All Dress April and it is the first day of the International Steampunk Symposium

Day 27 brought me to the first day of the International Steampunk Symposium. I didn’t actually get a picture of my costume that day, but I had this picture of the exact same thing I wore for Time Traveler’s Weekend at the Ohio Ren Fair. I actually think I did share this look before, but I am not 100% positive about that.

The dress is from Torrid’s Dr. Who Collection. And while this dress is long sold out, they do have a couple of sizes left in a similar dress. My boots are from Avenue, but they are long sold out. However, Torrid has several styles of lace up boots that would work well. To complete the look I have on a black felt derby hat from Spirit Halloween.

Day 28

Day 28 of All Dress April and day two of the Internationa Steampunk Convention

Day 28 and day two at the International Steampunk Symposium. This is the one and only picture I managed to get of my costume that day. Unfortunately it doesn’t show the whole costume. But once again, it is something I have had a picture of from a previous year, and nothing new here on the blog. The picture below is from two years ago in the same costume.

Unicorn Queen costume at day two of the International Steampunk Symposium

The black top is from Spin Doctor, but it has long since sold out. If you are looking for something similar, then you might try this Hell Bunny Scullion Blouse. The corset is a Daisy Corsets Women’s Top Drawer Cotton Steel Boned Overbust Corset With a Zipper Front in Navy Blue. My skirt is from Hips & Curves. It is their Victorian Bustle Skirt.

The accessories were both bought on Etsy. The necklace is from Dr. Brassy, but her store is currently empty and from my understanding may never be refilled again. The headdress is from the BlackUnicornShop.

Day 29

Day 29 of All Dress April and the final day of International Steampunk Symposium.

Day 29 was my last day at the International Steampunk Symposium. This outfit wasn’t complete, as I took off and forgot the jacket that was supposed to go with it. But here is what I have on:

As you can see, most of the accessory items are available on Amazon. I word of warning on the skirt. I have had a few issues with the fabric and seeming quality. But it is much more affordable than the average Victorian costume piece for a plus size skirt.

Day 30

I did not participate this day, I was just too worn out from the Symposium to move.

And that wraps up 2018 of All Dress April.

As a side not: Next year will be a bit different for me. Every since I started participating I have always had the Steampunk Symposium in there somewhere. Usually it is at the end. But next year things the Symposium got scheduled for a month earlier. So for those of you who look forward to the costumes, I will try my best to still do a post related to the Symposium. I am super excited about the theme that has been announced for next year. It will be Fantastic Beasts. Lots of plans have already started. Let me know in the comments below if you would like some posts about things I am making for costume and various things my steampunk group is doing.

The Best Gifts For Beauty Lovers Under $30

Best beauty gifts under $30

Best beauty gifts under $30

Everyone has at least one beauty lover in their life. But picking a gift for a beauty lover can be difficult and overwhelming if you aren’t really familiar with all the brands and items. And many of the most coveted items can be pricey, and maybe not really in your budget for a typical gift. That is why I have come up with a list of the best gifts available this year for the beauty lover in your life.

I have broken this into three categories: Lips, Eye & Face Palettes, and Everything Else. Most of these items, but not all, can be purchased at multiple locations. But for the sake of this post I will be linking to the stores where I purchased from, unless I find it somewhere cheaper for you. The under $30 price tag is based on full regular price, so no chance for you to have to pay more.

LIPS

Best lip products for gifts in 2018 Christmas Season1. Urban Decay Vice Lipstick – Holiday Kiss Collection – Sells for $17. I got mine in the color Rebel which is a Sephora-exclusive metallized nude shade of Urban Decay’s Vice Lipstick. This is perfect for the lipstick collector that loves limited edition.

2. Urban Decay Little Liquid Vices – Sells for $28. Know someone who loves liquid lipstick or has been wanting to try them. With this set you give them the opportunity to try four mini size shades for just a little more that the price of a full size. In this set you get to try two formulas, comfort matte and metallized. And you get the shades Backtalk, Amulet, Purgatory, and Crimson.

3. Urban Decay Little Vices Lipstick Kit – Sells for $25. You get five deluxe samples of Vice Lipsticks for about the same price of one full size lipstick. You get three finishes (cream, comfort matte, and metallized) in the colors Violate, 1993, Double Crossed, Love Drunk, and Mad. This is perfect for the lipstick lover who wants a variety of shades and/or finishes, also great if you are just unsure of what your beauty lover likes in a lipstick.

4. NYX Professional Makeup Meet The Metallics Lip Vault – Sells for $25. A lipstick vault is for the true lipstick fanatic. And you will be hard pressed to find a vault of any kind, even of a drugstore brand, for under $30. In this particular vault you get 12 lip colors. Despite what the name implies, not all of the lipsticks are metallic. You get 6 metallic shades and 6 soft matte lip creams. You get the colors Monte Carlo, Copenhagen, Paris, Budapest, Rome, and Dubai in each of the formulas.

5. Sleek Makeup Mini Major Matte Metallic Set – Sells for $10. (If metallics aren’t your thing, there is also a regular matte version available for the same price.) In this set you get four minis of what they call metallic matte lip gloss. To me I still consider this more of a lipstick, but you be the judge. But it’s definitely something every beauty lover will want to try. And at just $10 its affordable at even the smallest budget.

6. Sephora Favorites Give Me Some Lip – Sells for $28. These lip kits, as well as some of their other kits are quite popular at Sephora. I can not link to the exact one I am showing since I purchased it at a JC Penny’s Sephora and they have their own special ones not available online. However I am linking to one of the most similar ones in regular Sephora’s. I have bought them from both places as they offer different items at both locations. And often when the ones are sold out at regular Sephora’s then they still have plenty in JC Pennys. So always check there if you are looking for one of the Sephora favorites kits.

7. Huda Beauty Contour & Strobe Lip Set – Sells for $25. The Contour & Lip Strobe Sets are packaged in a covetable lip-shaped tin, each set features a full-size Lip Contour, a mini Liquid Matte Lipstick in a complementary shade, and a mini Lip Strobe. This set was originally offered in five shade combos at Sephora. Pictured above is Bombshell & Ritzy which has already sold out at Sephora, I am unsure about other sellers. There are still three shade options left that I think are equally lovely. There is Trendsetter & Snobby, Trophy Wife & Shameless, and Silver Fox & Angelic.

Eye And Face Palettes

Eye and face makeup palettes under $301. bh Cosmetics Zodiac Palette – Sells for $21.99. In this palette you get 25 eyeshadows (12 baked shimmers, 12 buttery mattes) and 1 luminous baked highlighter. This palette is slightly reminiscent of the Kat Von D Mi Vida Loca Palette. I think this would be a great gift for any beauty lover who missed out on that palette or anyone who likes unique or themed palettes.

2. Sleek Makeup Bring On The Night Gift Set – Sells for $30 (it does look like Walgreens is clearancing this set out for half price, but I am not positive). In this set you get the Vintage Romance Eyeshadow Palette, the Solstice Highlight Palette, and the Take A Cheeky Peek Blush Palette which can each be bought separately as well. There are really some great color choices in this set, and you get a lot bang for your buck. This might be a great option for someone who is just getting into makeup and you want to give them a little of everything.

3. Wet N Wild Fantasy Makers Paint Palette – Sells for $13.78. This is a little different from the other palettes. Instead of traditional makeup its is face paint palette, so something for those in your life who love to do costuming and do a lot of makeup with it. The one I am showing is the pastel version, but there are several color options available.

4. Stila Written In the Stars – Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow Set – Sells for $25. (Please note this set has sold out everywhere since I started working on this post. However each of the shades in this set or there is a larger set available if you are looking for sets.) In this set you get three deluxe sizes of the Glitter and Glow Liquid Eye Shadow. Colors included are Diamond Dust, Kitten Karma, and Smokey Storm. These shadows are really fantastic and the perfect gift for the girl who want her eye looks to pop.

5. ColourPop Semi Precious Shadow Palette – Sells for $26.00. This palette contains 8 metallic shades inspired by star stuff and celestial lights. Available online at both Sephora and ColourPop’s websites. Also available in certain Sephora stores. This is a great gift for the Colour Pop fanatic or the beauty lover who always wants to try the latest thing.

6. Femme Couture Naughty Metals Eyeshadow Palette – Sells for $9.99. This palette contains 8 metallic shades perfect for those Holiday looks. If metallics aren’t your thing try the Nice Nudes palette. Really want to elevate your look? Get both and mix shadows from both palettes. The perfect gift for the beauty lover who follows the trends when you are on a tight budget.

7. COL-LAB Pro Eyeshadow Palette Best of the Day – Sells for $14.99. This palette is available in four varieties, I am showing it here in Best Of The Day. Each palette comes with eight colors in three formulas (matte, satins, and metallics). This is from the new exclusive collection at Sally Beauty created by some top YouTube Beauty Gurus. This is the perfect gift for the beauty lover who wants to support her favorite YouTuber.

8. Maybelline The City Mini Palette – Sells for $6.49-$9.99. I purchased mine through Amazon Prime Pantry. That is the cheapest place to purchase it but if you are not a Prime member, then you can also find it at Walgreens. This palette is available in 7 color options, pictured is The Urban Jungle. Each palette contains six shades that are a mix of mattes, shimmers, and metallics. These are the perfect gift for the beauty lover who likes experimenting with bold looks.

9. NYX Cosmetics In Your Element Shadow Palette, Air – Sells for $30. This palette is also available in Wind, Earth, Fire, Metal, and Water versions. The air palette features pastel shades to create ethereal looks. Each palette comes with 12 shade, all except he metal palette offer a mix of textures. The air palette has a mix of mattes, satins and shimmers. This is a perfect gift for the beauty lover who fancies herself a unicorn at heart.

This is a great choice for sensitive skin types, or if you just don’t know what skin type they have.

5. Bitzy Body Shimmer Spray – As you can see there is no link to this product. That is because since I started working on this post a couple of days ago every place that had it seems to have sold out, at least online. I bought mine at Sally Beauty, so you could possibly find some in your local store. If you want something similar you can get the Glitter Powder Spray from HUBEE on Amazon for around the same price I paid. I personally think this would make a great gift for a young beauty lover or someone who likes to sparkle.

6. Models Own Celestial Lip Glitter Kit in Rose Meteor – Sells for $14.99. Also available in the color Moon Dust. This kit comes with everything you need to do a glitter lip. Hot Must Have Accessories For Summer 2017

Merry's Fashion Mirrored Cat Eye Sunglasses

Accessories are those finishing touches that take an outfit from just looking good to making you look really put together. You can even make the plainest of outfits look outstanding with the right accessories. That is why I wanted to share with you my top picks for summer accessories. Some of these I own and some of them are on my personal wishlist.

VK Accessories Thread Ball Dangle Earrings

Thread ball dangle earrings

These thread ball dangle earring from VK Accessories are available in six different colors including the black pair I am wearing. I love them, and I am considering ordering one of the other colors. Hello turquoise! This look is one of the hottest trends in earrings for this season.

Light Blue Ombre Tiered Thread Statement Layered Earrings

Another hot look for the summer are these ombre tiered thread earrings. They are available in seven color options, but I think this light blue color is especially eye catching. I know this is on my wishlist.

Layered Tassel Drop Statement Pendant Necklace

Don’t forget to pick up necklace to match those tiered earrings. The necklace is available in two color options. This particular color combo would work with two of the earring color options.

Mirrored Cat Eye Sunglasses

Merry's Fashion Mirrored Cat Eye Sunglasses

Mirrored sunglasses were definitely hot last year. This year take it the extra step and make it cat eye sunglasses like these from MyBruneiStore. They are available in nine color options, though some colors have a more mirrored effect than others. I have on the C04 BLUE.

Galaxy S5 Case 3D Cartoon Unicorn Soft Silicone Rubber Back Cover Skin for Samsung Galaxy S5

Soft Silicone Unicorn Phone Case

Some people might say a stylish phone case is the only phone accessory you need. And since unicorns are all the rage right now, they might be right with this phone case. My old phone case was wearing out, so I just got this one, and I think its super cute. The link above is to the one that fits my phone, a Samsung Galaxy S5. They are also available for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Samsung Galaxy Note 5, LG G Stylo/LG LS770/G4 Stylus/G4 Note, iPhone 5 / 5S Case, iPhone 6 Plus / 6s Plus, and iPhone 7. Depending on which phone you have there is also several color options available.

GUESS Flowers Necklace

Another top trend of the spring and summer is denim and white paired together. But what kind of accessories do you pair with that? Try this flower statement necklace from Guess. I don’t have this exact necklace, but I have something very similar that you will most likely see in a fashion post sometime soon.

Denim Dot Soft Headwrap

While we are talking denim and white accessories, why not try out this really cute headband. I love the vintage feel with the bow and the adorable heart print. This will definitely be on my list to buy soon.

Tell me in the comments below what’s on your must have list for this summer.

Hidden Gems Of Amazon – CowCow Seamless Sleeveless Skater Dress

Plus size skater dress from CowCow with a unicorn print

Hidden Gems of Amazon

It is time for another Hidden Gems Of Amazon. If you missed the previous posts in this series this is where I buy low cost plus size items on Amazon from unknown brands. I try on the clothes for you guys and give you a full report on the sizing and quality.

This time I am trying on a sleeveless skater dress from CowCow. CowCow is not as unknown as the previous brands I have done, but I feel like it’s still unknown enough that it was safe to include it. I mean I still hear at least once a month someone tell me they never heard of Torrid, so I know there are tons of people who haven’t heard of CowCow.

I actually had been thinking about giving this brand a try for a little over a year now. I first heard about it in a plus size vintage inspired BST group on Facebook. Many of the women in that group, like me, really like cute and kitschy prints. I hesitated for a long time debating over their sizing. This is a brand that comes out of China I believe, so you know how sizing can be. But I had many conversations with people and it just added to my confusion. You see I was told everything from they run true to their sizing chart to you should size down two because of how stretchy the material is.

For reference here is their size chart:

CowCow Size Chart

What I ended up hearing the most was size down one compared to their size chart. I am usually a 2X or 18/20 at most plus size stores. My measurements are bust: 49″, waist: 42″, and hips: 54″. Since the size chart would put me closest in a 3X I decided to go with a 2XL. Also for those of you who do not fit in these sizes, they have recently added sizes 4X and 5X. However I could not find the size chart for those. But I think you can pretty easily estimate measurements based on the sizes above.

CowCow Golden Unicorn Skater Dress

This is the CowCow Golden Unicorn Sleeveless Skater Dress. However this is not the dress I ultimately am showing you picture of me in. See when I listened to other people about sizing, it didn’t fit. I should have just went by the size chart.

I did not take a picture of me in it, but it was very tight. I was able to put it on. But there was like a ring of fabric that formed around my waist, especially right above my butt. It was kind of like the roll effect you get when you wear spanx, except this was in the opposite direction . So I ended up selling it. I do think that sizing may be a bit depend on two things 1. your body shape 2. your personal preference on how form fitting your clothing can be.

I wanted to reorder this same dress in the next size up, but at the time I was placing my order they were out of this pattern (they have since restocked if anyone is interested and it runs anywhere from $17.99 to $19.99 depending on the size you pick). So I went with my next choice.

CowCow Black Unicorn Skater Dress

This is the CowCow Black Unicorn Sleeveless Skater Dress. It sells for anywhere between $18.99 and $20.99 depending on the size you order. This time I ordered a 3X and the results were much better for me.

Trying on the black unicorn skater dress from CowCow

I paired it with a simple charm necklace I bought from a vintage store and a pair of light pink satin heels from Mootsies Tootsies. They no longer make those shoes and I honestly could not find anything even close to this style.

Side view of the plus size CowCow skater dress

The fit is much better in this size 3X. I do still have a bit of the wrinkling of the fabric just above my butt. However I think its pretty minimum, and if I sized up I more it would be too loose for my tastes.

Back of the unicorn print skater dress from CowCow.

For those of you who haven’t heard about this brand, the material they use is unusual. And my understanding is they use the same material on everything they make. I have heard it described as swimsuit material. I don’t personally think that is accurate. It is definitely similar to that kind of material. To me it feels closer to some active wear I have owned. But if you decide to order something, just be prepared that it’s not your average item.

Plus size skater dress from CowCow with a unicorn print

They have lots of patterns, from the more sedate to these fun kitschy prints. There is something for everyone’s taste.

They have more than just dresses as well. They also sell leggings, shirts, and socks. Not all categories are always available on Amazon though. There is a much bigger selection available as well as more customization available through the CowCow Website. There are definite plus and minuses to either way you order. The biggest being prices are cheaper ordering through Amazon, but there is less selection than on CowCow’s actual website.

Another cool thing about their website is if you happen to be an artist that always wanted to put one of your prints on clothing, you can do that and make money through CowCow. Take the time to check it out. And let us know in the comments below if you do have a print on CowCow that we should check out.

I want to hear from everyone. Let me know in the comments below if you have tried CowCow and what your favorite thing from them is.

2016 Gift Guide For The Girls and Guys On Your List

Christmas gift guide

Christmas gift guide

I know I have been doing a lot of reviews of products I thought would make good gifts, and those posts will probably continue on into December. But I wanted to actually put together a gift guide. This will include some things I have reviewed and a lot of things I have not. I will be including some things that make great stocking stuffers as well as gifts. And almost everything on this list will be budget friendly. I thought this was important because I see so many people make these fantastic gift guides, and even though my husband and I certainly aren’t poor I am left thinking who has the money to give these items as gifts. Nothing in my list should be over $50, and most of them are significantly less than that.

I really wanted to do this post because I love to give gifts. It is my primary love language, if you are familiar with The Five Love Languages. I think people sometimes misunderstand this love language and think its about materialism, but its really about symbolism. Its not about the money spent, its showing that you took the time to get to know someone enough to know what they like. Its showing someone you really know who they are, and you care enough to pay attention. And since gift giving, and receiving is so important to me, I wanted to take the time to share some items that might make good gifts. Some items are even items I have already bought for people on my list. If it is a child or someone I know for sure doesn’t check my blog I will share those items. So lets get started.

So in the comments below let me know who is on your list, and would you buy one of my suggestions for them? Keep things simple and from the heart.

My Plus Size Costume For The Cincinnati Midsummer Masquerade Ball 2016

Plus Size Lovesick Fashion Used as a costume for masquerade ball.

You may have seen my previous costume posts from the last two years of attending The Pandora Society’s Steampunk Symposium. And you can see those previous posts here and here. But this past weekend was the first time I got to attend their Cincinnati Midsummer Masquerde Ball. It was held at the Moonlite Gardens in Coney Island, which is a beautiful venue if you have never seen it.

The costumes for the most part were very different from the steampunk events. While there were a handful of people in steampunk most people wore fairy, goblin, or other various magical creature costumes. I did another version of a unicorn costume, but it was very costume light.

Plus Size Lovesick Fashion Used as a costume for masquerade ball. The pants and tops are from Lovesick. The top is currently sold out, but the Lace Flare Pants are still available in most sizes. The pants also are available in a deep red tone that should be in though the fall.

The shoes are FLOJOS Women’s Fiesta Flat Sandal in Black. If you have been reading my blog for any amount of time you know my love and loyalty to this brand. It is literally the only brand of flip flops I wear because they are so darn comfortable. I have them in so many styles and colors.

The head piece is from an etsy shop called Freckles Fairy Chest. She is based out of Orlando, Florida. Everything in her shop is beautiful and you will have a hard time choosing.

You can’t see my makeup in the photos unfortunately, but in addition to some glittery eyeshadow I also was fairly covered in Glam Dust in Nymph from Manic Panic. I used Glam Glue from Manic Panic to attach it and make it stay. If you have never used Glam Glue use it sparingly and carefully. It took using makeup remover and two showers to get all the glitter off after. Once you put anything on with glam glue its not falling off. It goes on looking like water, but it dries super quick. It is a costume lovers friend, especially if you are heavy on the makeup side. And it can be used for everyday makeup if you want to keep those glittery eyeshadows in place.

I would have done a more elaborate costume, but honestly it was hot and I knew it was going to be hot when I was planning what to wear. I don’t think I could have managed to wore a traditional costume. What I wore was so comfortable and airy. And yes you could see a lot of my body, but sometimes you just have to embrace your curves and be comfortable.

My friend Jenny went with me because we both love being geeks and getting dressed up in costume.

Jenny's Plus Size Costume for the Masquerade Ball

I don’t know what creature she was suppose to be exactly, I suppose I should have asked. But everyone kept calling her the dark mistress of the night. LOL

There was entertainment through the night. Like …..

Fire Dancer at the Cincinnati Midsummer Masquerade

Fire Dancers and ….

Fire Performer at the Cincinnati Midsummer Masquerade

And other Fire Performers…..Costume Contest at the Midsummer MasqueradeAnd a costume contest, which my friend Jenny entered upon my prompting.

Final round of the costume contest

And then she made it into the final round.

The winner of the costume contest...Jenny

And she won Best Dressed Lady. So that means we will be at Pandoracon this year too since her prize was a weekend pass to Pandoracon. If anyone has questions about Jenny’s costume and where she got anything she is wearing or any of the parts she has made leave your questions in the comments and I am sure she would be happy to answer.

There was lots of other entertainment including musicians and a DJ with dancing at the end of the evening, but I just didn’t get pictures of everything.

One of the best things about events like these to me is seeing all the creativity of other people and what they choose to do with their costumes.

Another Unicorn at the Masquerade Ball.

I met another Unicorn. We are pretty rare.

Jenny with timmymessyfingers

We both loved this mans creativity. He turned his beard into something like a rose bush and had birds all over his head. I wish now I had taken a more close up picture myself. But if you would like to see more of his creativity, you can find him on Instagram as timmymessyfingers.

And we also saw a lot of familiar faces from the Steampunk Symposium, like this lovely lady from The Airship Ashanti. Make sure you check them out if you are living in the Cincinnati area, they really do a lot of good things for the community.

Jenny and I really had a great time, and we without a doubt will be going back next year. If you live in the area, you should consider going. In the meantime if you are interested costume events or steampunk and live in the Cincinnati area, check out the Pandora Society’s website for upcoming events. Or if you live in the Lexington area and are interested in Steampunk contact me, Jenny and I have started our own steampunk airship. We are looking for people to join and come compete with us at the events or help us practice before hand. Our airship will always be a safe place with no bullying tolerated. So just contact me for info.

Over the last few years I have fallen increasing in love with Steampunk. For those of you not in the know, Steampunk is first and foremost a sci-fi sub-genre that is a imagining of what life would be like if the steam engine had taken over the world and stuck. There is a high emphasis with many enthusiast on fashion and costuming, as well as props and working mechanical contraptions.

I have always been a bit of a self proclaimed geek who enjoyed sci-fi heavy on technology, so when you give me a genre that also incorporates fabulous fashions and artistic expressions I go all out. If you follow me on Pinterest then you know that I have several boards dedicated to Steampunk.

This past weekend I went to my first ever Steampunk Con, The International Steampunk Symposium in Cincinnati, Ohio. Its an event that last for several days, however I was there for Saturday only. It was such a great experience I am already planning on going for the whole thing next year, as well as possibly a day or two of another one.

Before going, I of course planned out my costume. In the world of steampunk, you can be almost anything you can imagine, as long as you conform it fit the few guidelines to dressing steampunk. Like many things though, it is harder to find plus size items, and it often means a heftier price tag. But with a bit of imagination, craftiness, and willingness to put some time into bargain hunting you can cosplay a steampunk character with the best of them without breaking the bank. After a couple of funny conversations with some friends online, I chose to do a Unicorn Queen costume for the sake of an inside joke.

First lets talk about where everything came from.

The skirt was one of my Christmas gifts from my husband this year. It is the Victorian Bustle Skirt from Hips & Curves. It is also available in a black and white stripe pattern. Both options are available in 1X to 4X. Mine is a 3X, and I typically wear a 2X with most things at Hips & Curves, so you might want to size. I did order by the size chart on this one, so you should be good if you go by your measurements.

The top is the Prudence Top from Spin Doctor, and I purchased it from a Canadian store called Sweet Echo. I am wearing a 3X, as Spin Doctor fits more like a junior plus brand. For me, while in most traditional plus size companies I wear a 20W or a 2X, with Spin Doctor I wear a 3X if it is very stretchy or 4X if it has little to no stretch. There are even some items I can’t wear at all, as 4X is the largest size they offer.

The waist cincher is a custom made item purchased on Etsy, from a shop called Gone Away Designs. She has several waist cinchers as well as skirts that are fitting steampunk designs. There doesn’t seem to be any extra charge for larger sizes. And she is willing to customize, she did for me. Since mine was strictly for costume I wanted something that was going to be comfortable for the day as well as easy to take on and off as needed. So she made the front with a hook and eye closure for just a few dollars more.

The fascinator is also a custom buy from an Etsy shop called the Black Unicorn Shop. It is the same as the one pictured in the shops banner, but with a couple of slight modifications. This shop is located in Europe, so if you purchase from them, make sure you allow enough time for shipping when buying for an event.

Both my necklace and my scepter were custom designs from another Etsy seller called DR. Brassy’s Steampunk. My first purchase was the necklace, which is a part of her Trademarked Sightmares collection. Each Sightmares piece is custom made and unique. And as much as I loved the pieces in the pictures, they are even more fantastic in person. I decided to custom order a scepter shaped like a unicorn horn with a matching Sightmares eye. Here are a couple of pictures so you can see the detail more thoroughly.

All I can say is these are the work of a true artist, and I love everything about them. I will definitely be buying from Dr. Brassy’s Steampunk again in the future. Be sure to read up a bit on Dr. Brassy’s business as it in itself is interesting. And if you decide to buy from the shop, make sure to tell her I sent you.

The one thing that I am wearing that you can’t really see in the pictures is my shoes. When choosing shoes I had two issues I tried to keep in mind. First I have a lot of back and feet pain due to some of chronic pain conditions I have, so I needed something comfortable. I also have a foot that verges on being in wide widths depending on the brand, and unfortunately a lot of Victorian/Steampunk looking styles seem to run narrow. While I wanted to keep my cost down for my costume I decided my shoes were the one area I felt it was okay to really go ahead and splurge more than I had planned, and my feet thanked me for it. While I still had some soreness after it was all said and done, I know it could have been much worse. I ended up going with this pair of Hush Puppy Booties. I wish I could direct everyone to a place to purchase them, but I had to special order them from the UK even when I got them.

Of course I didn’t go alone. I went with one of my besties Jenny, who you have seen before as well as our husbands. Jenny wore a Tribal style costume, which is also one of the accepted styles of dress for Steampunk.

We had a great time together tooling around the convention.

I also want to share with you some of the other great people and fashion I saw at the Steampunk Symposium

2015-04-25 17.10.54

This lovely lady pictures with my friend Jenny is former news writer, turned Steampunk writer, Emily P. Bush. You can check out her bio on Amazon.

Then there was this fantastic costume:

I was suppose to get back with this lady and trade information, so if anyone that was at the con recognizes her, message me with her contact info or have her contact me. I want to give her the proper credit for her awesome costuming skills.

Another impressive costume as well as a just lovely lady to speak to:

I wish my pictures had turned out better of this one. I am not really sure what happened with them, but it looks like I had some interference going on when I took these. But this ladies name is Helena and she is a costume designer. She makes custom and original pieces for all sizes. You can check out her store the Kinki Kitty.

And by far one of the most awe striking costumes I saw was this:

It wasn’t just the costume, it was the makeup. Yes folks that is makeup. As she walked near it looked like she was wearing a mask, but then she spoke and you knew it was makeup. And her hair, which turned out to be a fantastic wig with intricately woven in lace and lights, as seen here:

The entire look was absolute perfection. Her name is Madame Dowd, and she is a costume designer. If you are interested in purchasing one of her custom costumes or accessories you can visit her Etsy shop the Boutique of Curiosity.

Now if you are wondering what actually happens at a Steampunk Con, here are a few details and pictures to help you out.

We had a tea:

And there was Tribal/Belly Dancing:

All this long with much, much more. And one of the best things is there were all types of people of all shapes and sizes and colors and ages. And everyone is okay with that. If you would like to join us next year you can sign up here.
