Plus Size Brand Spotlight: City Chic

Collage of City Chic Dresses I own.

I decided to do a series of Plus Size Brand Spotlights because I wanted to start sharing more focused information on plus size brands. I want to show off some of the things I have from the brand as well as some of the things that are currently available for purchase. But I also wanted to go beyond just the clothing and maybe talk about some of the other things that make some of my favorite companies great.

I decided to talk about City Chic for the very first Brand Spotlight. I have talked about how they are one of my favorite brands many times, and I thought it only made sense to talk about them here.

Clothing I Own

Over the last few years I have shown you a lot of great items from City Chic over the last few years. Let’s start by taking a look at some of the items in my closet. So if you have been following me for a while you probably have seen many of these. To see each picture larger, just click on them.

Currently only the Fleetwood Black Chiffon Wrap Maxi Dress and the Hot Summer Days Printed Chiffon Maxi Dress are available. However, City Chic often brings items back, especially if they know their customers want an item. So if you see an item you like, make sure to contact them and know you would like to see them bring it back.

The Fit & Style

For the most part City Chic fits very similarly to the clothing at Torrid. Being an hourglass shape, most of their clothes fits me very well. The one exception is bottoms. Not so much skirts, but anything with leg holes in them.

I have had a hard time finding something with the right fit for me. I have tried jeans, shorts, and pants and a couple were okayish, they just were not good enough of a fit to wear on the regular. That is not to say that I wouldn’t try any more pants, only the ones I have tried were not meant to fit my body shape. Based on what I have tried I would assume their pants were meant more for someone with an apple shape.

I think they do a good job with their sizing and consistency of the clothing being that size. But like anywhere there are occasional items that haven’t been exact. Overall I would say that 95% of the time clothing I order from City Chic fits me as I expect. I typically wear a 20 at Lane Bryant and Torrid, and at City Chic I wear their size L which they say is a 20.

The style available changes a bit season to season. If I had to compare them to other stores I would say take one part Torrid, one part ModCloth, and one part Eloquii. Mix those together and you would have the essentials of what City Chic is. Now if you are for some reason not familiar those other stores either, let me put it in terms of styles. I think City Chic gives you a bit of trendy fast fashion, there is also some elements of vintage, and you have some more unusual pieces that look more fashion forward.

What’s Available Now

Here are some of my favorite things currently available on City Chic’s website. I actually have a couple of them, I just don’t have pictures of me in them yet. I have the Pink Lulu Wrap Dress, and it is one of the few I would recommend sizing down one on.

Beyond The Clothing

In order to become one of my favorite companies, you have to do more than just offer a product I want. Having the product is just the start. Your customer service and how you choose to handle problems when they arise are what can make or break your company, at least in my eyes.

The way I look at it, there is no such thing as a company that doesn’t make some sort of mistake or have some sort of accident happen. When those things inevitably happen are you going to treat your customers like they are thieves just trying to take something from you, or are you going to address the problem and treat your customer with total respect and do the best you can to make things right? I have only ever had a couple of small problems when shopping with city chic, and I can honestly say that their customer service department is so great. They are doing it right, and treating customers the way they should be.

Add to that they now offer free shipping both ways(purchases and returns), and a guarantee on their fit. What more could I ask for in a company. They have a loyal customer for life.

Tell me in the comments below if you have tried City Chic. What was your experience with them?

Plus Size OOTD: A Walk On The Wildside

Plus size outfit of the day incorporating animal print.

One trend that has become more and more apart for the winter and on into spring for plus size fashion is animal prints. Whether it be a more traditional animal print or something more abstract they will be here at least for a little while.

I know some people can find animal prints intimidating. So I wanted to make sure and share some looks that incorporate animal prints in various ways. Today I am sharing my first look.

As a fit reminder I wear a size 20W or 2X at most plus size stores like Lane Bryant or Torrid. My measurements are Bust: 49″ Waist: 43″ Hips: 54″

Plus size outfit of the day incorporating animal print.

The skirt is the Leopard Lover Skirt from City Chic. It is a mini skirt length, but definitely not a super mini. It is a mid weight fabric, perfect for spring in most places, or winter if you live somewhere that doesn’t get very cold. It is available in sizes 14/XS to 24/XXL. I have on the 20/L.

The fit on this was great for me, which coming from City Chic I should not be surprised. I would say if you are an hourglass like me or a pear shape, you should probably order your usual size in this. If you are an apple, then you might want to consider ordering a size up as there is no elastic or stretch to the waist band.

The colors in this skirt all stay pretty traditional for a leopard print. However it still has a unique look because it has an added ombre effect.

The exposed zipper and clean lines help keep it looking stylish. The simplicity makes it easy to pair with other items.

Plus size outfit of the day featuring City Chic, Avenue, and Torrid.

I have it paired with the Super Soft Ruffle Cold Shoulder Tee from Torrid. Available in sizes 00 to 6. I have on a size 2. Sizes online are limited now. If your size is no longer available, I think most black tops or sweaters will work with this.

I also have on the Kimberly Over the Knee Wide Width & Wide Calf Boot from the Avenue. They come in sizes 7 to 12, and in two color options. I have them on in a size 9 in black.

I think this is the perfect outfit for the woman who wants to feel sexy but doesn’t want to go the route of skin-tight clothing or showing a lot of skin. It is a much more subtle sexy.

Let me know in the comments what you think about the animal print trend. Is it for you? If not, what trends do you like right now?

Inside The Dressing Room – City Chic And Forever 21 Fall 2017

Inside the dressing room with My Plus Size Life

Inside the dressing room with My Plus Size Life

Its been a while since I have taken you inside the dressing room with me. But I had to run into the mall to take something back the other day and I noticed that my local Macy’s is finally carrying a few City Chic items. I had a little time to spare, so I thought I would try on some things I had my eye on and take some pictures to share with all of you. I visited Macy’s and Forever 21, so there will be some variety in styles.

Now I did try the City Chic items on at Macy’s (there is no local City Chic store where I live), however I will be linking directly to City Chic. Based on what I have seen City Chic has better sales on items than what Macy’s can offer you. Plus shipping is free with City Chic even for returns. You only get free shipping at Macy’s if your purchase is high enough or if they have the item you were looking for in store and you can pick it up there.

Just like any other fashion post I do, I will share what size I tried on as well as any relevant information on fit or quality. For reference I typically wear a size 20W or 2X at most plus size stores like Torrid or Lane Bryant. My measurements are Bust: 49″ Waist: 43″ Hips: 54″ And I wear 40DDD bra.

So lets start with the City Chic items I tried on at Macy’s. They didn’t have a lot of items available, so I only tried on two here.

City Chic plus size So Fancy Fit And Flare Dress

So Fancy Crochet Fit & Flare Dress

I am in a L or 20 here. It has spaghetti straps, so I obviously do not have on the right bra for this dress, but besides that it fit well in the bust. In general I find the sizing and fit to be essentially the same as Torrid’s. And just like Torrid’s they do occasionally have items that are exceptions to this rule. I probably won’t buy this for me because of the pleats. I don’t really like how this type of pleating lies on me. I think this dress would look best on someone that’s body shape is an inverted triangle.

At first I thought this was going to be a bad choice for fall/winter. However after trying it on, it is way warmer than expected. There seems to be almost a double lining. So add a shrug and it should be fine.

Lady Victoria Lace Top from City Chic

Lady Victoria Lace Top

Again I am showing this in a size L or 20. I thought the fit on this one was perfect for me. There was enough extra room at the bottom that this could also work for someone who is more of a pear shape. It does have a built-in cami that is black, but it could easily be removed if you needed or wanted to. I really loved the details on this top, from the collar to the little flutter sleeves. I could easily see this being styled several different ways. And I will most likely purchase this sometime in the near future.

Now lets take a look at what I tried over at Forever 21. Since Forever 21 is a juniors store, that means their plus section is junior plus. I usually have to size up to a 3X, but because of variances in items there are some items I need a 2X. Occasionally I would need larger, but 3X is currently where their sizing starts. (Side note, if you see something blurry and white on some of the pictures, it’s not the clothing. Forever 21 just has dim lighting and really smudged mirrors.)

Plus Size Lace Up Sleeve Dress

I tried this on in a 3X. I thought this dress fit okay. The sleeves fit really well, and I liked the lace up detail. The body fit a little snugger than I personally would like. I might have been okay with the tightness if it were done in a different material. But at $23.00 there is an element of “you get what you pay for”.

I tried on with it this Sequin Hooded Bomber Jacket. I can not find this on their site, but if you like it, its worth looking in your local store. Mine had lots of these. These jackets should work for any body type.

Plus Size Lace-Up Tube Dress from Forever 21

I also tried this on in a 3X. I actually picked this up initially to try on because I thought it was a skirt. They had it hung oddly. But I decided to go ahead and try it on to share. Again I thought the fit was okay, but in a different way than the previous dress. The top looked and felt like the right tightness, but I didn’t feel like it was secure at the very top. I thought the bottom also looked fine, but it felt very tight across the hips. And the length was indecent in the back. I feel like this would fit someone who is a perfect hourglass the best, and it probably would look good on someone who is an inverted triangle as well.

Plus Size Fuzzy Sweater and Plus Size Lace-Up Mini Skirt

Plus Size Fuzzy Sweater

and

Plus Size Lace-Up Mini Skirt

I have on a size 3X in both pieces here.

The skirt I thought fit well and was made out of a great fabric. I liked the lace up detail, but I didn’t think they stood out as much once it was put on. I also think it would be better paired with something different from this sweater.

The sweater also fit great, and it felt great on. I think it will work for many body types but will probably look best on someone with and apple shape. This is supposed to be a crop sweater, and since its not a form-fitting one, I was glad it was on the longer side. However since its barely crop length, if you are on the short side it may not read as crop on you. I really loved this sweater, and I would have purchased it, however I noticed it sheds horribly. So be aware of that.

Plus Size Mesh Trim Bralette and Plus Size Sheer Mesh Tee from Forever 21

Plus Size Lace-Up Mini Skirt,
Plus Size Mesh Trim Bralette,

and

Plus Size Sheer Mesh Tee

The skirt is the same one from the previous outfit.

The bralette is a size 3X. It fit perfectly and I did buy it. It is padded, but removable padding. Honestly the way it is made makes it look more like a crop top rather than a bralette.

The top is in a 2X. I also tried a 3X, but it was really loose on me. I thought this fit well in the 2X. It was comfortable, but again I probably would not pair these tops with this skirt.

Plus Size Stripe Lettuce-Edge Top

Plus Size Stripe Lettuce-Edge Top

This is a 3X. The fit was again perfect in this item. I thought they worked well with the Dark Wash Jeggings from Torrid I had on. It does not call this a crop top on Forever 21’s website, but it definitely fits me the same as the crop sweater I tried on. I did end up purchasing this for myself.

I also wanted to take a minute and give a shout out for Forever 21’s bralettes. In addition to the one I showed here in the post I also tried on and bought their Plus Size Lace Bralette in a size 2X. If I had wanted a tighter fit I probably could have worn a 1X in this one. Probably the most comfortable yet supportive bralette I have tried yet. Looks like they are almost sold out online. I really hope they will consider making them a permanent part of their collection.

As always I want to hear from you. Tell me in the comments below if there is a store you want me to order from or go take you in the dressing rooms with me. I know the frustration of trying to figure out what your size is in a brand. I want to help make that easier for all of you.
