Product Fails – Makeup, Hair Care, And Subscription Boxes – January 2019

Product Fails January 2019

Product Fails January 2019

There have been a lot of things I have loved over the last year, and there so many of them that I want to share with you. But, I thought as I come back from my winter break from the blog, it might be good to get the bad out of the way first. I did after all say last year that I would do one or two of these posts a year about things that didn’t work for me. And that is exactly what these post called product fails are, at least for the most part, they are products that didn’t work for me. That is to say that, I recognize that most of these products may work for someone else. Just because they are a fail for me doesn’t mean they don’t work for other people. We are all different people and can have different favorites.

For the sake of these posts I will not be linking to the products. So lets take a look at the products I have tried over the last few months that didn’t work for me.

Makeup

NYX Total Control Drop Foundation

The first product I tried this year that was a fail for me is the NYX Total Control Drop Foundation. I was really excited to try this as I had heard so many great things about both drop foundations in general as well as this one in particular. But it just didn’t work for me.

While it was advertised for all skin types, I don’t think it really works well for anyone with textured skin, especially if it is dry textured skin like mine. This formula dries down to a really matte finish, and it left my skin looking extremely dry and cakey. It dried my skin out even more than normal and it was almost to a painful point. I even gave it a second try, but still had horrible results.

NYX PRO Total Control Drop Foundation Brush

Along with the foundation I had to try the NYX PRO Total Control Drop Foundation Brush. There are many foundations out there that suggest using a certain brush with the foundation, but it’s not always necessary. However, everything I had read and saw prior to using this foundation made it seem that using NYX own foundation brush with the product was very important for proper application.

I have definitely had foundation brushes that I thought was fantastic, but it has never been my first choice for application of foundation. But this brush was a fail because I felt like it absorbed twice the amount of makeup a sponge does. I never could figure out where it was absorbing to, but the product was definitely not on my face.

Tarte LipSurgence Lip Tint in Moody

I recently tried the Tarte LipSurgence Lip Tint in the color Moody. I had gotten this sometime last year, either in a multi pack lip kit or in a subscription box. I honestly can’t remember which. And I do believe that Tarte is clearancing this product out and planning on not carrying it anymore.

Now Tarte claims this is the best of two world. You are supposed to get the pigmentation and staying power of a lipstick with the hydration of a balm. This was definitely not my experience. If anything I found this to be the exact opposite. It was very drying on my lips and it went on patchy and wore off fast. Now I did try mine in a sample size. I will suppose that it is possible that could have effected it somehow, or that I got a bad one. I doubt it though.

Clinique High Impact Mascara

I also tried a sample size of the Clinique High Impact Mascara. I honestly thought I would love this mascara since one of my top five favorite mascaras is the Clinique High Impact Curling Mascara. However, with this mascara there was a lot of clumping and flaking that I never experienced with the curling version.

I know at least part of my dissatisfaction lies with the wand. It is incredibly different from the one in the Curling mascara.

Hair Care

Macadamia Professional Style Extend Dry Shampoo

I had actually been using the Macadamia Professional Style Extend Dry Shampoo for some time. It had been one of my favorite dry shampoos.

But when I received my most recent order I first noticed that the bottle looked different. I was hoping that was all that had changed, but that was not the case. I immediately noticed upon application that the fragrance was different. And it wasn’t too much longer that I had an allergic reaction.

So if you don’t have fragrance issues like I do, this one may be a great one for you. I do believe it is only the fragrance mix that was changed, the way it behaved in my hair was the same. And it is a great dry shampoo for anyone who has dry hair.

Aquis Peime Starter Kit

Most of you know I often get packaged called VoxBoxes from Influenster. A couple of months ago I got one containing a hair care system from a brand called AQUIS. It is sold on the AQUIS website as well as at Sephora.

When you are sent a box from Influenster there are always requirements you have to meet in order to receive future boxes. For this particular box the only requirement was to review the product on Sephora’s website. However, I had initially intended to review this here on the blog in she shampoo and conditioner review series. I did not end up doing that because after using this product once I had nothing good to say about it at all, so I decided to wait and include it here instead.

This was sent to me claiming it was great for thick heavy hair that breaks easily. It was supposed to limit the amount of water your hair was exposed to, all while thoroughly cleansing your hair. And it was supposed to be easy to use. While I am sure this works wonderfully for some people’s hair, it did not work for mine. My hair never felt clean and at least a couple of the steps didn’t realistically work in my hair at all.

Subscription Boxes

For the last category, I only have one item at the moment. Unfortunately I do not have any pictures of this to share, and I think once I explain what happened you will understand why.

So some of you may remember back in November I was sharing some Scorpio related products. I had mentioned in one post that I would be doing a review of the My Zodiac Box. I have actually paid for two boxes, one of which I sort of received. I say sort of, because they sent me the wrong box (This was after them not sending my box out to begin with). I spoke to the owners and was told I was going to be sent a replacement. I waited a couple of weeks and nothing came. So I messaged them, and no response. I messaged again, and again no response. So obviously I cancelled my subscription, and in no way can I recommend this box to anyone.

Product Review – COL-LAB Cosmetics Line From Sally Beauty

COL-LAB Cosmetics

If you follow me over on Instagram then you already know that late last month I received a gift card from Sally Beauty. I decided the best way I could put this to use is to go pick up some of the new COL-LAB line and test it out for all of my readers.

In case you haven’t heard about COL-LAB yet, it is Sally Beauty’s latest beauty line. It launched just this November, so future reference that is November 2017. It was created in collaboration with several well know beauty influencers. In fact a couple of my favorites were involved, shout out to Dani from Coffee Break With Dani and Lizzy from What Would Lizzy Do. Eight different influencers were involved in this brands creations, each with different skin types and cosmetic preferences.

My goal when I went shopping was to pick up everything I needed to create a full face of makeup using just this brand. I did not include anything that I don’t do at least 50% of the time or more. For instance, brow product is not something I always use, so it was not included in my purchases. I also did not see an eyeshadow primer or setting spray in the store I purchased at, so I used my normal products for those.

So let’s take a look at what I got and my thoughts on each of the products.

COL-LAB Collection Makeup

1.  Palette Pro Eyeshadow Palette in Best of the Day – This is one of five options in an 8 color palette. I picked this particular color option because I felt it had the biggest variety in colors and thus offering the most options of looks. However you will notice that my picture looks a bit different from what is shown on the website. I think that my picture more accurately shows the colors.

Overall I thought these were definitely quality eyeshadows. I found the colors to be very pigmented. They applied well to the lid with little to no dust pick up. I was able to create a few decent eye makeup looks. However, I had some difficulty blending them. They seemed to set in place quickly. Even though I felt this color selection had the broadest selection of colors, I still felt a little limited in what I created. That is not anything bad against the palette itself, I am just not the kind of person that is prone to doing the same makeup look more than a time or two. So for me, I prefer a lot of colors as options. If you are someone who does their eye makeup pretty consistently the same then this would make a great palette for you.

I will share my favorite look I created at the end of this post.

2. Soft Spot Sheer Blush in Meet Cute – Meet cute is a unique color, or at least I think so. It is sort of a mix of a red and a mauve with some brown thrown in. This is one of six color options available in this blush. It is a sheer buildable blush.

The first time I dipped my brush into the blush, I really thought this was going to end up being too much of a color for me. Just with the smallest of dabs my brush had picked up a ton of powder. But I am happy to say that it lived up to its claim of being a sheer blush. In some ways it reminds me of a NARS blush.

3. Set The Stage Ultra-Fine Loose Setting Powder in Porcelain/Ivory – This is one of six color options in the setting powder. It is milled very fine and has a super soft texture. The package comes with a powder puff, however I personally would recommend using this with a powder brush.

I chose a shade lighter than my skin in this powder because I was concentrating what I used on setting my concealer under my eyes and I wanted to brighten that area. However my under eye area is also really dry, so it is usually challenging to set my under eye area without leaving it looking cakey. This setting powder worked wonderfully though. And after a little setting spray it was practically invisible. I was highly impressed.

4. Bold-Faced Liner Waterproof Eye Lining Pencil Drama Queen – This is one of six shades available in this eyeliner. The shades are all darker colors. They are all shades of blue, brown and black. Drama Queen, the one I chose, is a very dark true black.

This is waterproof, which is something I almost always want in an eye liner since I like to put them in my waterline most of the time. I would have like to see more color options, maybe a beige skin tone and bright pop of color or two, but perhaps they will be adding more things like this in the near future. I did think it applied beautifully, and the wear was good. It did not outshine my very favorite eyeliner, but it takes a very close second place.

5. The Filter Highlighting Powder in Glow For Gold – This is one of four color options for the Filter Highlighting Powder. It has a soft silky texture. It is meant to give the skin a soft glow.
This highlighter is way more subtle in use than it looks in the package. Maybe a little too subtle for my personal preferences. But again this is a personal preference thing. I don’t really own any other highlight to compare to this one. But rather than it having glitter or a sheen finish it felt more matte. I thought the texture was wonderful and it did blend it very easily and I really liked that. This would be a great highlight for those of you who want to highlight, but don’t necessarily want to have all the glow on your face.

6. No Flaws Cream Concealer in Ivory/Sand – This is one of eight options for colors in this cream concealer. It comes in a twist up stick. It is made to cover both under eye circles and uneven skin tone.

Let me say first that I have tried a lot of concealers in a lot of different forms, and I have had an extremely difficult time finding ones I thought worked well on my dry textured skin, especially right under my eye area. It always seemed like they would either look cakey, settle in the fine lines around my eyes, or be so watery that they wouldn’t cover any dark spots. This concealer however is my dream concealer. It glides on so soft and smooth. It is super lightweight that you can barely tell you have anything on. Not drying or cakey and covers beautifully. It has never settled in a line or creased. I can’t imagine anyone designing a better concealer. This just blew all of the other concealers in the world out of the water. Seriously, you need to try this.

7. Full Body Lipstick in Really?? – This full body lipstick comes in sixteen color options and two finish options. Really??, the color I have is a matte finish. These lipsticks are designed to go on in a cream and dry down to either the matte or satin finish.

I thought that it applied and wore well. The color applied in one even swipe, which is really hard to find for me. Even though it is a Matte it was not drying. It is a very similar feel to Urban Decay’s Comfort Matte. And I thought the wear time was insanely good. I will definitely be picking up another shade or two to try at some point.

8. Bright Spark Radiant Foundation in Sand – The radiant foundation comes in ten color options. It is a low to medium buildable foundation. It is meant smooth and even your skin tone and leaving you with a soft radiant glow. (Side note: radiant foundations work best for normal to dry skin)

This is probably the product I was most hesitant to try since my experiences with drug store level foundations have not been good and I end up reacting to them. However, I am happy to report that I was very pleasantly surprised by this one. There was no detectable fragrance in this, so that is always a plus in my book. It comes in a bottle with a pump, so no touching the product or exposing it to the air unnecessarily. The foundation comes out in a very moussey texture and after applied dries down to a satin finish. The finished look, feel, and wear is very similar to the Nars Sheer Glow Foundation but with just a tiny bit more coverage. The color is a better match for me than any offered in the Nars line, at least at my current color level.

9. High-Rise Insane Length Mascara Extreme Black – This is one of three color options for this mascara. Made to lengthen and lift your lashes. Comes in a unique package with a long skinny wand. And I believe the brush is silicone.

This is fantastic mascara. Just like the foundation, I have struggled to find a drugstore level mascara that I really liked since they discontinued one I really liked years ago. I love the very skinny wand and brush design. This definitely makes my top five favorite mascaras. It wears and performs very similarly to Clinique’s High Impact Curling Mascara, but it is harder to remove.

Final Thoughts

There were definitely three stand out stars for me in the products I tried. It is probably pretty easy to guess that those are the No Flaws Cream Concealer, the Full Body Lipstick, and the High-Rise Insane Length Mascara. I also really enjoyed the foundation, but I don’t know that it was as much of a star as the other three products.

I think everything I tried were good solid products, even the things that were not necessarily what I would want for me. Nothing was an outright fail. There are definitely things I think that could be improved upon in the line, mainly the selection of colors in the face products. I really hope that they make an effort to add a broader range of shades over time.

Overall, I was really happy with this line. There are more things that I hope to try in the future that I didn’t try in this go around. Please let me know in the comments if there are any products in particular you would like a review of.

I did snap some pictures of my favorite makeup look I created when testing out this brand, and I wanted to share that with you.

Let me know in the comments below what you have tried from COL-LAB or what you are dying to try.

The gift card I used to purchase my products for this review was sent to me by Sally Beauty, however all thoughts and opinions expressed here are my own. My reviews are all completely honest.

Top Ten – Liquid Foundations and BB Creams For Dry and/or Textured Skin

Top Ten Liquid Foundations and BB Creams

You know I love a series here on the blog. So here is another series, Top Ten. For right now I will be sticking to various beauty and skin care favorites. I will see after I get finishes with everything if I want to move on to another area. Only time will tell.

Top Ten Liquid Foundations and BB Creams

As you can tell by the title of this post, our first Top Ten will be Liquid Foundations and BB Creams for Dry and/or Textured Skin. I wanted to make sure I covered this because I always seem to have a hard time finding information on the face products for dry skin.

These won’t be in any particular order of favor, just a list of ten. I have decided to mix both liquid foundations and BB Creams because they serve a similar purpose, just a different amount of coverage. This is probably going to be the only makeup list where you won’t find any drugstore picks, though there is definitely at least one option that is priced like a drugstore brand. While I certainly like drugstore brands for a lot of things, there are only a couple that don’t contain a derivative or chemical twin of Balsam Of Peru, and unfortunately I don’t find them to be great on my dry textured skin.

1. boscia B.B. Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 27 PA++

s1339035-main-Lhero

This probably has the least amount of coverage out of all of the ones I am including on this list. This is one of a couple that I like for good skin days and I just want to go really casual, but I want more than bare skin. I have heard some people complain that this has shimmer in it. Don’t be concerned if you see this in yours. What you are actually seeing is the physical sunscreen that is used. Once the product is applied to your skin it is no longer noticeable.

2. Clinique Even Better Makeup SPF 15

Clinique Even Better Makeup SPF 15

As funny as this may sound, this is the foundation that got away. And I will explain. I had received some samples of this awhile back. None of the shades on the sample card matched me, but there was one close enough that I gave it try since I wasn’t really going anywhere that day. I loved the way this one wore and made my skin feel. And if you read up on this foundation you will find it has almost skin care like qualities. Top it off with a price that isn’t bad. I was excited to find a color match. I made my way to Sephora the next week and promptly found out that Clinique just does not make shades that matches me. But I honestly still wanted to include this in the list for all you ladies who have more of a red undertone to your skin. It really impressed me that much, someone should be wearing it.

3. Baviphat Urban Dollkiss All in One A to Z Cream

Baviphat Urban Dollkiss All in One A to Z Cream

This is the most economical choice out of the group selling for just $12.00. Out of all of the BB Creams that made the list, this has the most coverage. Maybe it’s because this is more than just a BB Cream. It is a multi-function all in one cream base, acts as BB, CC and primer. I even use this sometimes as an under eye concealer.

4. Marc Jacobs Beauty Genius Gel Super–Charged Oil–Free Foundation

Marc Jacobs Beauty Genius Gel Super–Charged Oil–Free Foundation

This is the one with the most coverage on my list. It is listed as a medium coverage, however I feel it is closer to full coverage. This one works well on dry skin, but not as well on textured skin. It won’t settle in fine lines, so it also works well for aging skin.

5. Hourglass Illusion® Hyaluronic Skin Tint

Hourglass Illusion® Hyaluronic Skin Tint

If you love all things Hyaluronic Acid like I do, you may fall in love with this foundation. It behaves like a BB Cream with the coverage of a foundation. Great for mature and dry skin. It has that great cooling sensation that you get with any product with Hyaluronic Acid. And like all products from Hourglass it is fragrance free and made without the harsh chemicals.

6. Dr. Jart+ Premium Beauty Balm SPF 45

Dr. Jart+ Premium Beauty Balm SPF 45

There are four different Dr. Jart+ BB Cream formulas. This is one of the two that I have on this list. This is the most moisturizing formula they have, and it will leave you with a dewy look. I really love the dewy look, but this one I always feel I have to use a setting powder with or it will transfer.

7. Dr. Jart+ Black Label Detox BB Beauty Balm

Dr. Jart+ Black Label Detox BB Beauty Balm

The second BB Cream I like from Dr. Jart+ is this Black Label One. Almost as moisturizing, but the finish isn’t quite as dewy. This one is recommended for normal or combination skin, but I feel like it works just as well on my dry skin. I never feel like I have to use a setting powder with this one, but when I do I still don’t feel like I look dry.

8. stila Aqua Glow Serum Foundation

stila Aqua Glow Serum Foundation

This gives you the dewiest look possible and a head start on highlight. This one always wears perfectly on my dry skin. In a lot of ways I would say my skin might even look better after wearing it. The cap which doubles as a dropper has a learning curve to it, but it’s not too hard to figure out. This is one of the more expensive ones on the list, but from my perspective it is worth the price.

9. NARS Sheer Glow Foundation

NARS Sheer Glow Foundation

This gives the most natural looking skin out of the foundations that I have listed. It has sheer to buildable coverage, hence the Sheer part of the name. Now since it has the Glow in the name you might think it will have a radiant dewy finish like the stila foundation, but it does not. The foundation is more of a Satin. There is a glow but it is very subtle.

10. Josie Maran Vibrancy Argan Oil Foundation Fluid

Josie Maran Vibrancy Argan Oil Foundation Fluid

This one also has a dewy radiant finish, but it is somewhere in between the NARS foundation and the stila one. As you can see this foundation won the Best of Beauty Award from allure last year. I think out of all the foundation choices, this one has the potential to work with the most skin types.

Let me know in the comments below what your favorite foundation is. And let me know what you would like me to push to the front of the line for this top ten series.
