Rant: Old Navy Completely Dissed The Plus Size Women Of Kentucky

I was originally working on another post to go up today when I felt the need to write this first. This is something that has happened many times before with other retailers, and I feel very passionately about this topic. So the other post can wait.

You may or may not be aware that Old Navy announced recently they would be adding plus sizes to select stores. That is 75 stores to be exact. Those select stores will now be carrying up to a size 30W in store. I think we all thought this was about time. And I was really excited to hear plus sizes were coming to stores for many reasons. For me personally I seem to be all over the place in their sizing, so I really need to try their clothing on to find a good fit. But I also was excited for the women in my state, many who don’t have disposable money to order something and then it not fit. Old Navy is more on the affordable side, and for women to be able to buy in store is a huge thing in a state where poverty is a huge problem. I had plans on going and getting some things to share with all of you.

Now I don’t know exactly how many stores in total Old Navy has (I read its a 1,000, but I have no confirmation), but I do know that there are a least a few states that don’t have any stores, like Alaska and Idaho. So my initial thought when I heard the news was that obviously some states, bigger states like  California, are going to have more than one location with plus sizes. But aside from that then all states that have a store will get at least one location with plus sizes in the stores, right?

The email announcement that plus size clothing was now in stores went out on the 9-21-18. I didn’t have a chance to look it over for a few days, but did finally make the time to sit down and read my emails. In case you did not get that email or just don’t read your emails, here is what it said:

Your Style. Your size.

When you log on to Old Navy’s website and go to their store locator, there is now a link at the top you can click to see a list of where the stores that carry plus sizes are located. (Just a note: The link that lists where Old Navy is adding plus sizes is working, but Old Navy seem to have take the actual list off of it between the time I started writing this and the day it was scheduled to post. I am not sure  why, but I am leaving the link in case they put the list back.) Obviously, the first thing I did was going to see where my local store was. That is when I realized, oh not every state is getting plus sizes. And I have to admit, I am kind of pissed about it.

old navy disses Kentucky

Here in Kentucky we have one of the highest populations of plus size women per capita, yet we are not getting not even one store with plus sizes. And it’s not just Kentucky they left out. Other states like West Virginia are also getting skipped over. Actually, only 31 states are getting plus sizes. Why?

I’m sure if we asked Old Navy they would respond with some polished bull shit answer like “we analyzed our orders and we felt we had to give the stores in the areas where we receive the most plus size orders the clothing in stores”. I want to be clear, I have not asked them, and as far as I know Old Navy has not said this. But this has happened time and time again to my state when companies choose where to go, what stores to incorporate plus sizes into, etc.. They don’t realize how short-sighted they are being. If your goal is to bring in new sales, you don’t go where you are already making the sale.

Don’t get me wrong, I am really glad Old Navy is finally bringing plus sizes back into stores. I just think if they truly cared about making their clothing more accessible, they would spread their plus size stores out better. The demographic and market is here, they just haven’t been given the opportunity to see what you offer. Not everyone is comfortable ordering online. And even if they are comfortable ordering online, your sizing is just not consistent enough, and dealing with returns eats up time and money.

I’m really tired of companies skipping my state. There is a store the next state over that would be about an hour and a half drive away. And I have driven that far in the past to do a store try on. But that was for a new store with limited locations. So I don’t feel inclined to do that here. Quite honestly I don’t think I will be spending any money at Old Navy till they put plus sizes in a store in my state.

Tell me in the comments if Old Navy skipped over your state, and if so what state are you in?

My Thoughts On The ModCloth Buy Out

Modcloth taken over by Jet

Modcloth taken over by Jet

If you are a ModCloth lover or follow any number of plus size blogger, you probably already heard ModCloth has been bought out. The news was leaked just the day after their Groupons went up for sale. They were bought by Jet who is owned by Wal-Mart. This has in fact made many ModCloth lovers, including me quite upset.

The problem is the two companies sort of stand for completely different things, both from a business and ethical stand point. Plus given their total different approach to plus size clothing, this may leave the plus size consumer out in the cold. And based on just a couple of changes that has already taken place, one can only speculate that this takeover will see the decline of the things most have loved about ModCloth.

You might have seen that I posted about the Groupon that ModCloth had posted the day before the news leak of the buy out. I myself had bought one. After reading the news I went back and forth in mind about what I wanted to do. So I personally have made a decision. After I use my Groupon, I personally will not be shopping with ModCloth any more, and I will explain why.

I currently do not shop with Wal-Marts or Jet. I do not like their business practices or their treatment of their employees, and I do not want to support any business they own. Where I live there are many options to shop at places that treat their employees well and that are more ethical. I do on rare occasion have to buy from Wal-Mart if they are the only place that carries something and its an emergencies, but I try everywhere else first. I want to also say, when I was on a tight budget and living by myself, I did shop at Wal-Mart because I had no choice. I totally get not everyone has that choice because of finances or location, and I hold no judgment of anyone who does shop there. This is simply a personal decision.

For me, I feel like that even if everything stayed the same at ModCloth after this I would not want to shop there. Because even if they did continue paying those employees fair wages and keep ethical standards, shopping there is still ultimately supporting the parent company.

ModCloth for a long time has filled a niche in the plus size market. But don’t worry, there are other places to get those vintage and retro inspired clothes you desire if you feel like I do. I will be working on a list for you of alternative places to shop, and I hope to have it up soon.

In the mean time I would love to hear your thoughts on the take over. Tell me in comments below how do you feel about it? Will you continue shopping ModCloth? And please share any and all the vintage and retro clothing brands you know.

Plus Size OOTD – A Tale Of Two Stores

Plus Size City Chic Pelum Top

City CHic Top, Torrid Jeans, and T.U.K. shoes bought on ModCloth

I might have mentioned a time or two in the past there are always two brands that I can count on to consistently fit me, and fit me well. Not only that, but I feel their styles often compliment each other. That probably has a lot to do with why I have so much of both of them in my closet. Now if you have been reading my blog or following any of my social media for a while, there is probably good chance you already know what brands I am talking about. For those of you who are new here or just are not good guessers I will go ahead and tell you I am talking about Torrid and City Chic.

For size reference my measurements are Bust: 49″ Waist: 42″ Hips:54″ I typically wear either a 2X or 20W at most traditional plus sized stored like Lane Bryant or Torrid.

Plus Size City Chic Pelum Top

I am wearing a faux leather peplum top from City Chic. I purchased it a little over two years ago, so I am sorry to say this is no longer available. I really like peplum tops, but on my body type they are tricky to find ones that fit me in a way that I both like and doesn’t make me look pregnant.

In order for it to fit me the way I like, I have found the peplum either needs to be very structured (like the one I am wearing here) or the complete opposite and be completely soft fabric. Anything in the middle seem to not work on me. Also the placement of the waist band is a big deal. I don’t think I will stop here with the explanation and if I hear from enough of you that you want me to do an actual post about the different types of peplums I will do that.

Plus size outfit of the day

On the bottom I am wearing a pair of Torrid Multi Zip Jegging in weathered black. They don’t have this color anymore, but I think the dark grey looks very similar. You can find those on both Torrid’s Website and on Amazon. I have these jeans in three different colors. You have seen the dark wash in previous pictures. They are my favorite jeans I own. These for some reason do not fit like the other two pairs. These are a lot looser in the booty and the legs.

Shoes are TUK bought on Modcloth

For anyone wondering what I have on with it. The shoes are a pair of TUK heels I purchased on ModCloth a couple of years ago. They don’t have any left, however there are still a few in stock at TUK’s Website for now. Grab them quickly if you want them.

Black cat necklace

And this is the necklace I have on. I briefly subscribed to the Cat Lady Box. It didn’t work out for me for the most part, but now you can buy their exclusive items in their shop. So you can still purchase this Sterling Silver Black Cat Necklace in their shop.

Tell me in the comments below do you have two clothing brands that work well together for you?

Plus Size OOTD – That’s Punked Up

Wide calf boots from the Avenue

Today I have for you another soft punk look for you. I actually wore this out to pick up groceries and run other errands right after taking these pictures and it got a lot of compliments. I actually live in a relatively conservative area of the US too. So just don’t be afraid to try new things because you are afraid of what people might think.

Plus size outfit of the day

I am wearing the Torrid V-Neck Sweater in Black. However this seems to be only available in size 00 now. But they do have it in a dark red color as well which can be found on both Torrid’s Website and Amazon.

Plus Size outfit from Torrid and Avenue

These exact pants are no longer available. I purchased them last year. However the Luxe Stretch Skinny Pant in Plaid Print are pretty close. They are available both on Torrid’s Website and on Amazon.

Wide calf boots from the Avenue

The boots are from the Avenue. However they are completely sold out and I do not see anything similar.

In the comments below let me know if you have tried any of these soft punk looks since they have been back in style? Is it too far out of your comfort zone, or maybe you like a harder look.

Hidden Gems Of Amazon – CowCow Seamless Sleeveless Skater Dress

Plus size skater dress from CowCow with a unicorn print

Hidden Gems of Amazon

It is time for another Hidden Gems Of Amazon. If you missed the previous posts in this series this is where I buy low cost plus size items on Amazon from unknown brands. I try on the clothes for you guys and give you a full report on the sizing and quality.

This time I am trying on a sleeveless skater dress from CowCow. CowCow is not as unknown as the previous brands I have done, but I feel like it’s still unknown enough that it was safe to include it. I mean I still hear at least once a month someone tell me they never heard of Torrid, so I know there are tons of people who haven’t heard of CowCow.

I actually had been thinking about giving this brand a try for a little over a year now. I first heard about it in a plus size vintage inspired BST group on Facebook. Many of the women in that group, like me, really like cute and kitschy prints. I hesitated for a long time debating over their sizing. This is a brand that comes out of China I believe, so you know how sizing can be. But I had many conversations with people and it just added to my confusion. You see I was told everything from they run true to their sizing chart to you should size down two because of how stretchy the material is.

For reference here is their size chart:

CowCow Size Chart

What I ended up hearing the most was size down one compared to their size chart. I am usually a 2X or 18/20 at most plus size stores. My measurements are bust: 49″, waist: 42″, and hips: 54″. Since the size chart would put me closest in a 3X I decided to go with a 2XL. Also for those of you who do not fit in these sizes, they have recently added sizes 4X and 5X. However I could not find the size chart for those. But I think you can pretty easily estimate measurements based on the sizes above.

CowCow Golden Unicorn Skater Dress

This is the CowCow Golden Unicorn Sleeveless Skater Dress. However this is not the dress I ultimately am showing you picture of me in. See when I listened to other people about sizing, it didn’t fit. I should have just went by the size chart.

I did not take a picture of me in it, but it was very tight. I was able to put it on. But there was like a ring of fabric that formed around my waist, especially right above my butt. It was kind of like the roll effect you get when you wear spanx, except this was in the opposite direction . So I ended up selling it. I do think that sizing may be a bit depend on two things 1. your body shape 2. your personal preference on how form fitting your clothing can be.

I wanted to reorder this same dress in the next size up, but at the time I was placing my order they were out of this pattern (they have since restocked if anyone is interested and it runs anywhere from $17.99 to $19.99 depending on the size you pick). So I went with my next choice.

CowCow Black Unicorn Skater Dress

This is the CowCow Black Unicorn Sleeveless Skater Dress. It sells for anywhere between $18.99 and $20.99 depending on the size you order. This time I ordered a 3X and the results were much better for me.

Trying on the black unicorn skater dress from CowCow

I paired it with a simple charm necklace I bought from a vintage store and a pair of light pink satin heels from Mootsies Tootsies. They no longer make those shoes and I honestly could not find anything even close to this style.

Side view of the plus size CowCow skater dress

The fit is much better in this size 3X. I do still have a bit of the wrinkling of the fabric just above my butt. However I think its pretty minimum, and if I sized up I more it would be too loose for my tastes.

Back of the unicorn print skater dress from CowCow.

For those of you who haven’t heard about this brand, the material they use is unusual. And my understanding is they use the same material on everything they make. I have heard it described as swimsuit material. I don’t personally think that is accurate. It is definitely similar to that kind of material. To me it feels closer to some active wear I have owned. But if you decide to order something, just be prepared that it’s not your average item.

Plus size skater dress from CowCow with a unicorn print

They have lots of patterns, from the more sedate to these fun kitschy prints. There is something for everyone’s taste.

They have more than just dresses as well. They also sell leggings, shirts, and socks. Not all categories are always available on Amazon though. There is a much bigger selection available as well as more customization available through the CowCow Website. There are definite plus and minuses to either way you order. The biggest being prices are cheaper ordering through Amazon, but there is less selection than on CowCow’s actual website.

Another cool thing about their website is if you happen to be an artist that always wanted to put one of your prints on clothing, you can do that and make money through CowCow. Take the time to check it out. And let us know in the comments below if you do have a print on CowCow that we should check out.

I want to hear from everyone. Let me know in the comments below if you have tried CowCow and what your favorite thing from them is.

Mad For Plaid

Plaid All Nighter Pant and Black lace up tee from torrid

If I haven’t mentioned it a hundred times before, I am absolutely in love with all the plaid that is out this year. And this is no exception.

Plaid All Nighter Pant and Black lace up tee from torrid

For this look I have on a the Torrid Deep V Lace Up Top in Black. Unfortunately the black is sold out online, however it is available in an olive green color. However, if you really like the black check Torrid’s website often as they are prone to bringing items back periodically. You can find the olive green version on both Torrid’s Website and on Amazon.

Plus size outfit from torrid.

My shoes are from Madden Girl. They were from several years ago. But if you would like something similar take a look at the Madden Girl Debbra Sandal.

Back view of the Torrid All Nighter Ponte Pant.

And the pants are Torrid’s Skinny Pant – Multi-Zip Plaid All-Nighter Ponte. I have several versions of this pant. It is by far my favorite pant. It is like a mix of a thick legging meets a dress pant. It smooths you all over, but it remains extremely comfortable. And it makes your booty look great. These pants are available both on Torrid’s Website and on Amazon

Torrid's All Nighter Ponte Pant paired with a Lace Up Tee.

I have worn this several times now, and I can honestly say it is one of my favorite outfits this season. It is comfortable, easy to wear, and it always gets compliments.

Tell me in the comments, what is your favorite pair of pant?

What To Wear With A Kilt

Okay, so its not actually a real kilt, but it has the look and feel of one. I was lucky enough to get one of the Outlander Fraser Tartan Plaid Skirts from Torrid. I would love to tell you that you could get one too, but at this moment they are sold and I have no idea if they are going to bring them back. I do think that its highly likely they will if enough people request it, especially considering quite a few of the pieces from this collection sold out within the first three days.

Outlander Collection Skirt from Torrid paired with a high neck top from JC Penny

It doesn’t really stand out in the pictures like it does in person but there is a very distinct line of a berry or wine color running through the plaid pattern. So I paired the skirt with this BELLE + SKY Long-Sleeve Clip Dot Woven Blouse in Deep Ruby from JC Pennys. It is also currently out of stock, however you can sign up to be put on an email notification list for when its back in stock.

Plus size plaid kilt with a high neck top

The top is pretty sheer, so under it I have on a Torrid Foxy Cami in merlot red. It matches pretty perfectly. They look like they belong together.

Torrid, JC Penny, Journee Collection create this plus size fall fashion look.

The wide calf boots in gray are from the Journee Collection that often sells on Zulily. If you don’t find them on there today, don’t give up. These sorts of boots and this collection sell on Zulily pretty often, but the collections only sell for three days at a time. So just check back often and sign up for their emails if you want a good deal on these sort of boots.

So in the comments below tell me if you managed to get one of these skirts, and what did you pair with them?

Achieve The 90’s Clueless Vibe With Society Plus

Last week Society Plus started their Black Friday Sale early and will be running it till the 27th of this month. If you caught my blog post with my Society Plus Black Friday Wish List then you already knew about this. Some items have long sold out, but I am still hopeful they will be restocked before the sale ends. And I do promise to keep you guys notified if that happens.

But I did get some of the pieces in from the list I created and I wanted to share with you what they look like. Have you always wanted that 90’s clueless look and felt like you just couldn’t achieve it because no one ever made it plus sizes? Well now they do. Thanks Society Plus!

Outfit from Society Plus

The jacket is the Anastasia Lace Jacket. It zips up about 3/4 of the way up. Long sleeves and two zippered pockets in front.

Back view of the Anastasia Jacket and Cher skirt from Society Plus

As you can see there are also lace panels in the back of the jacket.

Outfit from Society Plus to create a 90's Clueless look.

With the jacket I have on the Lakynn Faux Suede Scoop Crop Top and the Cher Plaid Mini Skirt in Gray/Charcoal.  I ordered everything in an 18/20, which is my usual size. One tip, I suggest ordering up a size in the crop top if you have a large bust like me. These don’t have as much stretch as the crop tops from the summer. I am exchanging sizes for mine.

Lakynn Crop Top and the Cher plaid skirt from Society Plus

If you are wondering about the accessories, here is what I have on with it.

The necklace is a 9 PCS Classical Women Gothic Fashion Choker Necklace Set that I found on Amazon a while back.

The boots are from the Journey Collection that sells often in Zulily’s Wide Calf Boot Botique.

Let me know in the comments below if you have already got any of these pieces, and if so are you loving them?

Hidden Gems Of Amazon – Knit & Chiffon Combo Open Front Cardigan

side view of the Sunsent Open Front Cardigan

Since my previous post, on The Hidden Gems Of Amazon, went over so well I will be doing more. Today I bring you the next item I have found on Amazon, and we will take a closer look at whether it is a hidden gem.

Hidden Gems of Amazon

The item we will be looking at is listed as the Sunsent Women’s Knitting Chiffon Joint Long Sleeved Front Open Cardigan Multicoloured.

The picture above is what is posted on Amazon. There are additional pictures, but this is the main picture and I don’t think any of the other pictures show it to look any different.

It costs $8.99 and $0.50 shipping. I placed my order on September 1, 2016 and I was given an expected delivery date of October 17, 2016. It arrived on the 15th of October. So it did come within the expected shipping times, but even coming from China that is the longest I have ever had to wait for a package. So if you do order one of these keep in mind that you may have to wait a month and a half to get it.

Here is the size chart as well as a couple of warnings they have posted on the page.

Size Chart:
S–bust:126cm/49.6″–length:91cm/35.8″–sleeve:56cm/22.0″
M–bust:130cm/51.2″–length:92cm/36.2″–sleeve:57cm/22.4″
L–bust:134cm/52.7″–length:93cm/36.6″– sleeve:58cm/22.8″
XL–bust:138cm/54.3″–length:94cm/37.0″–sleeve:59cm/23.2″
XXL– bust:142cm/55.9″–length:95cm/37.4″–sleeve:60cm/23.6″
XXXL– bust:146cm/57.5″–length:96cm/37.8″–sleeve:61cm/24.1″
Note:
Because of factors such as display pixel, so there may be a little color difference.
Because of the different measurement methods, there may be 1-3cm of the allowable range error.

As always I will remind you, my measurements are Bust: 49″ Waist: 42″ Hips:54″ and I generally wear a 20W or 2X at most plus size stores like Lane Bryant or Torrid.

I really liked the look of it being really loose, so I thought I would go for the XXXL, but even though the size is listed in the size chart they don’t seem to offer it in this item. So I ordered a size XXL instead.

Front view of the Sunsent Open Front Cardigan

As far as the quality goes, it is better than I expected. There were no weird seeming issues or any kind of holes. Nothing that would make me want to send it back.

Back view of the Sunsent Open Front Cardigan

The fit is a bit of a different matter for me. It doesn’t make me want to send it back, but it might for some. I don’t know how they arrived at their bust measurement, but they were way off. If I pull the open front together the two sides will touch, but barely. It is at least five to six inches off the mark from the 55.9″ listed in the size chart. The arms are a great fit though, and could easily accommodate a little larger arms than mine.

Side view of the Sunsent Open Front Cardigan

The weight of the fabric is about right for me with the weather we have been having this fall. It would not work for anything much cooler, at least for me. I think its perfect for the sixty to seventy degree range, but I tend to be very temperature sensitive and need heavy layers once it gets colder than that.

Front view of the Sunsent Open Front Cardigan

I tried to stay pretty simple with what I paired with this since the focus of this post is on the cardigan. But in case anyone was wondering about the other things I have on, I will list them here.

Hello Kitty Patches Full Length Leggings

Torrid’s V-Neck Tee in Heather Gray

Skechers Women’s Career First Impression Ballet Flat in Black & White

Let me know in the comments below if you have tried this or anything else from this brand. And don’t forget to give me your suggestions on what to try next.
