Product Review: Carol’s Daughter Monoi Repairing 3-Piece Starter Kit (Shampoo, Conditioner, and Hair Mask)

What you get in the Carol's Daughter Monoi Repairing 3-Piece Starter Kit

I am on a personal mission this year to find a shampoo and conditioner that both works for my hair type and for my sensitive scalp. This is the second review of this series, make sure to check out my review of the Not Your Mother’s Blue Sea Kale & Pure Coconut Water Sea Minerals Shampoo and Conditioner to see the first review.

My Hair And Scalp Type

My hair is very thick and coarse. It tends to be very dry, and can turn brittle if I wash it too often or don’t condition it enough. But my hair is reasonably healthy outside of that, as I do not use heat on it very often and I try to take care of it to the best of my ability.

My scalp goes back and forth between dry and oily depending on the time of the year and the products I have used. My biggest struggle with my scalp is from the allergic contact dermatitis caused by my allergy to Balsam of Peru. This causes a dry, scaley, itchy coverage on the scalp that looks a lot like dandruff. I have never been able to get it fully cleared up on my scalp. At its worst, when I have a reaction to something, it also burns and can blister.

The Product

What you get in the Carol's Daughter Monoi Repairing 3-Piece Starter KitThis is the Carol’s Daughter Monoi Repairing Collection 3-Piece Starter Kit, and it runs $26.00 for the set. This kit includes:

  • Monoi Repairing Shampoo (2.0 fl. oz.)
  • Monoi Repairing Conditioner (2.0 fl. oz.)
  • Monoi Repairing Hair Mask(2.0 oz.)

I bought mine on Amazon, but it is also available at Ulta. These are all small travel size bottles that come in this package, but there is a Monoi Luxury Hair Care Gift Set that comes with full size products if you would rather have that. The shampoo, the conditioner, and the hair mask can also be bought separately in full size.

I had never tried anything from this brand before, but I had heard a lot of wonderful things about the brand. They are (or at least they use to be) a small woman owned company. Their products do not contain sulfates, parabens, petrolatum, mineral oil, or artificial colors.

I picked this line specifically because it contained a lot of ingredients I had good experiences with. It was for intense moisture and repairing the hair. One of its large claims was that it would help prevent breakage of brittle hair. It really had a lot that appealed to me. And outside of fragrance, there were no ingredients that immediately concerned me. (If you also have a Balsam of Peru allergy, please note this does contain citric acid. I know that some react to that, I do not.)

How It Performed

I tried the Carol’s Daughter shampoo and conditioner combo four different ways, all ways that I typically would use other shampoos and conditioners before doing this review. I wanted to make sure I had a fully adequate comparison to the other shampoos I have used in the past. And so for me that means the hair mask in this set only got used once.

The first time I tried them with a hot oil treatment that I use fairly often. Then I tried them on their own. The third time I used them with a Korean brand dandruff shampoo that I use occasionally. And the fourth and final time I used them with the hair mask that came in the set.

I was actually surprised at how moisturizing the shampoo was. I realize that the shampoo contains oils, but I have used lots of shampoos that contain various types of oils and none of them have felt like that. I think it did a decent job at cleansing too, but the standout feature is just going to miniaturization. I almost felt like I could have went with out conditioner after the shampoo, if that tells you anything.

The conditioner performed just as well. Not only was it moisturizing, but it also felt very smoothing to my hair. I could definitely tell that after my hair dried this was still smoothing as I was not experiencing as much fizziness. I typically have to use an additional leave in conditioner with most shampoo/conditioners. But I did not have to with these.

One big thing I could not say whether it was specifically the shampoo or the conditioner, but I definitely saw less hair loss with this set. It could have been coincidence, but I find that unlikely.

The Allergy Effect

As I mentioned in my last post, anything that has a fragrance, I always put it through the smell test. Smelling this product was no help. It definitely has a unique fragrance that I have never smelled before. That actually made me far more nervous than it just having fragrance. I suppose it was the element of the unknown. To be completely honest here, I am not really a fan of how this smelled, but if something works for me I don’t care ultimately.

I am happy to say that I did not have any reaction to the shampoo and conditioner. However, I don’t think it did anything special as far as helping my dermatitis either. The one exception would be when I mixed it with my dandruff shampoo. That was probably the longest I have went itch and scale free in a long time. I don’t know if that was coincidence or if it was something special about the combo. And it would take a lot longer of testing to find out.

Now I am not sure why, but I didn’t fare as well with the hair mask. After using it I was itchy almost immediately. Looking at the ingredients nothing looks all that different or stands out to me as to why the hair mask would cause that.

Final Thoughts

Overall, with the exception of the hair mask, I really like the Carol’s Daughter Monoi Repairing Collection. I think I will keep this on the list of shampoos and conditioners that I feel okay using in a pinch. If I don’t find anything better this year I may even circle around and give this one another try for a while.

Tell me in the comments if you have tried anything from Carol’s Daughter before. Let me know what you tried and what you thought about it. And as always, I am taking requests of what you would like to try.

Beauty Tools

1.  str8glam Wet/Dry Hair Straightening Brush – Sells for $54.75.

I have very course thick hair. It is very hard to do anything with it. In the past I have tried a lot of tools including flat irons, but never had any success with them working on my hair. But in recent years I have tried a lot of new tools trying to find something to do with my hair. This has been one of the few success stories. It not only straightens my hair it does it quickly and easily. Plus its way less damaging to your hair and no worries about burning yourself either.

2. Valuetom Professional Ceramic Hair Curler with Temperature Control – Sells for $42.99
Another one of my success stories for my hair is this unique hair curler. You may have even seen videos on YouTube of people trying them out and freaking out, or saying they were too afraid to use them. But this is the one and only thing that has worked to curl my hair. I have even had problems with getting perms to hold in the past. Curling by any other means falls out fast. In fact many of you commented on my hair in the BOHO styled post I did with Simply Be a couple of months ago. And this is what I used to get that curl. When I use this on my hair the curl lasts until I wash my hair. It is amazing. It even lets you decide what type of curl you want.

3. Akean Professional Makeup Brush Cleaner and Dryer Machine – Sells for $49.99

Another product that I highly recommend and that a lot of you expressed interest in after I posted the video on Social Media of me using it is this makeup cleaner and dryer. It works fantastic and is a huge time saver. It literally cleans and dries your brushes in just seconds.

Tell me in the comments what your big beauty splurge is.

Product Review – AOMUU Facial Scrub And Massage Pad

AOMUU scrubbing and massage facial pads

I am always looking to try new way to exfoliate my skin. Exfoliation is an essential part of my skin care routine. It should be for everyone, but it is even more so important for me due to my skin condition cause by my allergic dermatitis. Exfoliation is one of the main components that helps keep it under control. I have talked a lot about how my Balsam Of Peru Allergy affects my skin and skin care routine and if you want to know more about it you can look back at any of the many post I have written referencing it.

Currently I use approximately four different types of exfoliation methods that I switch back and forth from. Typically I only use one type a day. Each type I use is good for different things. But like I said I am always looking to try new products. So when I heard about the AOMUU Facial Scrub And Massage Pad I was eager to give it a try.

AOMUU scrubbing and massage facial pads

I had seen a few people trying it out on YouTube and talking about how great they were and that they were switching to using these instead of their sonic cleansing brushes. I think this is a big part of what had me so curious. So I will make sure to touch on pros and cons of these facial scrub pads so you will know whether its something you would actually want to make that kind of switch for.

So they come in a two pack. I am not sure if they all come the exact same color or not, but I have two packs of them and they both came in this pink and green combo. Not that the color really matters to me, but I know some people do care.

When you flip the pack over and on the back you instructions and tips.

Instructions and tips on the back of the box of the AOMUU facial scrub pads

Even before you open the package you can see that the pads each seem to have a little handle. So I took mine out and took a closer up picture of both sides for you. This way you can really get a good look at both the bristles as well as what the handle looks like.

Front and bacl of the actual AOMUU facial scrub and massage pads

Now if you look at the bristles on the front you can clearly see the three different sections and how they differ. They start at the top being more fine. The box says this is meant for more sensitive parts of the face like around the eyes and nose. Then as you graduate down they become more coarse. The medium ones in the middle are meant to be for exfoliating and removing dead skin cells. And the coarsest on the bottom, it says it’s for massaging the face and enhancing blood flow.

And that hole in you see in the handle, it goes all the way inside from what I can tell. I find this a bit disconcerting at times. I am probably worrying about nothing. I know that silicone is less likely to develop mold and mildew, but I find myself wondering if its developing in there since water can get inside of it. But the handle is supposed to work like a suction cup, and you are supposed to be able to hang it up like this. I tried that out and while it stayed up for a bit, about thirty minutes later I heard a crash in my bathroom. Lesson learned, never trust a suction cup.

Now they recommend that you apply your cleanser to your face first and then start using the scrubbing pads. But I had to be rebel and try it both ways just to see if it really made a difference.

Trying out the AOMUU with cleanser on the scrubber first to see if it makes a difference

Basically I did see a small difference in using the cleanser on my face first. But the difference was so small I honestly would not worry about it that much.

I have now tried this out for about twelve days now. I have tried to use it at least once a day, sometimes twice a day.

Me using the AOMUU facial scrubbing pad

This also claims that you can use it as a makeup brush cleaner. While I did not try this out I do believe that would work as it looks very similar to one of the makeup brush cleaners I already own. I don’t think I would use the same one I used for my face though if I were going to do that.

So I know the big question is “what did I think?”.

Well I have very mixed feelings about this product. For me I like strong exfoliation, and this just is not that. But if you are someone who finds the sonic cleansers or physical scrubs a bit too much for your skin, then this might be a good option. However on the flip side when you look at it as a facial massage, then I really loved it. I have had salon facials before, and this felt almost as nice as some of those. Now if only it came with someone to run it across your face for you……Well I can dream can’t I?

Would I replace my sonic face brush with this? No. Will I continue to use this? Yes, but just not for the exfoliation. I really did like the facial massage aspect. I can see this being something I incorporate into my routine maybe once a week or once every other week. I do have some myofascial pain and I could see this potentially helping with that.

If you are interested in trying the AOMUU Facial Scrub And Massage Pads you can find them on Amazon.

Tell me in the comments below if you have tried these already and if so what did you think?

Now for those of you that have stuck with me this far, I have a bit of surprise. As with a lot of my review products I got this at a discounted price for review purposes, however all opinions are all my own. But this time I wanted to do something nice for my followers, so I went back and got another pack of these with my own money so one of you will also get to try these out. You will also get a few sheet masks. The giveaway will happen on Instagram, so you will want to make sure you are following me there if you want to win. You will need to keep an eye out over the next couple of day on my Instagram post for the one with the instructions to enter.
