This is going to be a pretty brief post again. If you follow me on social media, then you may have already seen my post the other night about me being ill. I have managed to get both Sinusitis and the Flu at the same time, and I have been pretty out of it. I am starting to feel minutely better, but it will most likely be a few days before I am really better.
I of course missed posting the subscription box reviews I had for Thursday and today. And if you have been with me for at least a year or more, you know I take a couple of weeks vacation from the blog to work on my home and Poshmark every year after Christmas. I had planned on taking three this year because of a lot of changes that need to be made before my niece moves in this summer. But due to being sick it looks like that may be extended. I am just going to officially call it, and say that my vacation has started.
I will be posting on social media some during this time, I won’t be completely abandoning everything. I will be back to the sometime mid January. I was hoping for the 13th, but it really will depend on how long it takes me to recover from being sick.
Good news for those of you who have been missing fashion posts, I do have several planned for January and February. I am hoping some of the home changes we are making will make it easier to keep them coming on a more regular basis. I will also have those last couple of box reviews for you as well as some shampoo reviews and some new things I am working on.
In the mean time, I want to wish each and every one of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Whether you are just super busy or just a chronic procrastinator, I know there will be lots of you out there who will be shopping for gifts at the last minute. No matter the reason you are still in need of gifts, I am here to help.
I have been working on an Amazon Idea List just for you last minute shoppers. So make sure to check out my Last Minute Christmas Gifts list. In addition to my list, take a look at the Last Minute Deals page, while you are on Amazon.
Zulily has a Holiday Shop posted, where many items can ship out fast. Those items guaranteed to arrive for Christmas will be marked with a little package symbol.
If you are specifically looking for plus size clothing, then take a look at Simply Be. They now offer two to three day tracked shipping when you upgrade to Express Shipping. And its free when you spend over $100. Most people should be able to order up to the 20th and receive their packages on time for Christmas.
Hautelook offered the following graphic for their cut off dates to get items for Christmas. The picture is clickable if you want to find out what is available on Hautelook.
You can get your Walgreen’s orders shipped to you in time for Christmas if you order by 3 p.m. on December 21st. They have a Holiday Shop page set up to make your Christmas shopping easy. And for you super late shoppers there is same day pick up on all photo gifts. How great of a gift would a mug or a puzzle with a family photo be? And if that isn’t your thing, you can always check where the item you are looking for is available in your town. Every item has a button that says find in store. Simply click that and it will tell you all the stores closest to you that stock the item you are looking for. No more driving all over town searching for it.
Tell me in the comments where your favorite place to do last minute shopping is.
Presents are great, especially when you get something you really love. As I have said many times here on the blog gift giving is my primary love language, so I understand the importance of a good gift. But there are also times where maybe you aren’t really doing presents, and what you really want to concentrate on is giving back.
Whether you are giving back to loved ones or in a broader sense, like to your community, you may not be completely aware of what your options are. That is why I wanted to share some ideas here on how you can give back.
One of the most meaningful and impactful ways to give back is being present and giving of your time. Ironically this often the hardest thing to do for many of us. When it comes to how you do this for the people you love, only you and they know what will really be a meaningful way to show up for them. But let’s talk about ways you can give time to help your community.
A great way to serve your community would to be volunteering some time in soup kitchen. Of course if you are living in a smaller town you may not have a soup kitchen, but perhaps a local church or food bank may offer some sort of community meal for those who are less fortunate. Organizations doing this type of work will vary from town to town. But one organization that has soup kitchens is nationwide, the Salvation Army. Not all Salvation Army locations have soup kitchens, but most in middle to large sized cities will.
Perhaps you are more of an animal person, or maybe you are just an introvert. Did you know you can become a volunteer at an animal shelter? There are lots of ways to donate your service to animal shelter, all depending on your time, ability, and experience. But there is something for everyone to do. Like food banks, the organizations in your area may vary by name. But in most of the US you will have either a Humane Society or an ASPCA close to you. Don’t be afraid to reach out to any of your local shelters to see what kind of help they need.
Maybe you really love children, and you feel like your time would be best served by working with them. There are so many kids out there that need good role models in their life. Sometimes it means nothing more than just spending time with them and listening to what they have to say. You can give this much needed support to a child in need by signing up to be a part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America program.
If none of these are quite right for you, and you don’t really know where to volunteer in your community there is help. Check out the website Volunteer Match to find the opportunities that are right for you.
Many of us may want to volunteer our time, but because of various reasons we can’t. But I am willing to bet that almost all of us have things lying around our house that we no longer want or need. Things that are just taking up space. Rather than tossing that out or getting ten cents for it at a yard sale, why not donate your clutter?
There are lots of places like thrift stores, community outreach centers, abused women’s shelters, missions, churches and homeless shelters nationwide where you can donate new and used clothing as well as household goods. There will always be local places that are specific to your town, but there are absolutely national services that are accessible to most people in the US, and in some cases across the world.
Here is a brief list of some of the most accessible organizations to donate to:
To find out where you can donate locally a simple google search should help. Please keep in mind each place will take different items and have different requirements for what they accept. If you have not donated to a place before always call ahead or check their website before just dropping items off.
There are of course other things you can donate, outside of clothing and home goods. Lots of places take food donations for those in need. One of the biggest and wide spread food banks in my state is God’s Pantry. To find out where the closest food bank is to you, you can check with Feed America. In addition to food banks most soup kitchens and some churches will take food donations.
And if you are feeling really generous, you can also donate your car with some organizations. Catholic Services as well as NPR and Goodwill will accept donations of car.
I often hear people talk about how they want to make a difference in the world, but they don’t know how or don’t feel capable of doing anything big enough to make a difference. I just wanted to give everyone a reminder that while it may not feel like a big thing to you, sometimes even the smallest things feels huge to someone who has nothing. And small things can have big impacts.
In fact if you want to see more of the impact you are making, try helping one family or one person rather than going through a big organization. Many small organizations will let you adopt a family to help. Or you most likely know someone in need and don’t even realize it, maybe even someone you care about. Many people are too embarrassed or too proud to ask for help. In this country we are taught from a young age that we should be independent and its shameful to ask for help. But many people do need help.
So you might ask how do you help someone who won’t say they need help. I know it seems unproductive, but you can do it. Some options might be just asking if they would like some help. If you are going to donate things, perhaps make a post on social media asking if anyone wants to take a look at the items before you donate them. Where there is a will, there is a way. But I think the easiest way to make an impact for the people you care about is to just let them know you care and that you are available if they need you.
And this is me letting you all know I care about you. How can I help?
It is subscription box review again. I have quite a few of these I want to try to get through before Christmas time gets here. If you missed my last one, you can go back and check out the Black Unicorn Subscription Box review at your leisure. You can also find all of the subscription box reviews I have done by going to any page here on the blog, find the green bar under my logo and click on the down facing arrow. You should see a search box and you can search for subscription box reviews.
A few months ago when I first started looking for subscription boxes to review for this year I had a few goals in mind. I wanted to find a variety of types of boxes, boxes in various budget levels, and boxes that in addition to being of interest to all of you would maybe make good gifts.
I have definitely shared some affordable boxes in the beauty category before, but not everyone is into makeup I do think this will by far be the most affordable subscription box I have shared as of yet, and I believe it is very giftable.
Because of the nature of this box and the variety that can come in it, I thought I would share what I got for both the months of October and November.
Price: $8.99 to $56.99 (This box has a large price range because of several box options and payment terms options. Prices may vary when you go to sign up if they are running a sale.)
Where Is It Available: This subscription is only available to US residents.
Who To Get It For: Anyone who loves jewelry, especially earrings. who has pierced ears. Age doesn’t matter as they have a box option for younger subscribers. This would also be great for someone who is just beginning to build their jewelry collection.
What You Get: There are three different earring boxes available from Ladiee T Jewelry that somewhat customizable to your own tastes and preferences. Here are your options:
Princess Collection for Girls – Each month’s box contains two randomly selected pairs of earrings that is age appropriate for girls between 5 and 10 years of age. Earrings in this box are deliberately kept small in size and are mostly studs.
Women’s Monthly Earring Packet – Each month you will receive one medium to large sized pair of earrings. Earrings sent will be based on your taste and style preferences chosen.
Women’s Monthly Earring Box – Each month you will receive two stylishly hand-picked medium to large pairs of earrings. Earrings sent will be based on your taste and style preferences chosen. (This is the one I will be sharing with you here.)
Drawbacks: If you like jewelry that is matching sets, this box won’t offer that. I don’t really see an option to find that on their main website either. So if that is a big deal to you, then this might not be the subscription for you.
When you sign up you fill out a brief preference profile.
First you choose if you are subscribing for yourself or giving a gift. If you choose a gift subscription, then once you fill out the profile you will have the option to add a message that get emailed to the recipient once the subscription mails out.
First you are asked which subscription you want. Then you are asked about your metal color preference. No preference is totally an option here. Next you are asked about earring style preference, and again you can absolutely choose no preference. Finally you choose the length of the subscription you are paying for at once.
Every month the subscription arrives in a small cardboard box. (And again I would like to remind everyone to not worry about my safety, the mailing address shown is not my home address just the mail box I get my blog mail at. But I appreciate the concern people have shown)
On the inside you will find your earrings individually wrapped as well as a small card, all lying on a bed of filler paper. The card just let’s you know about an opportunity to get an extra pair of earrings in the next month’s box by sharing it on social media.
This is the inside of the October Box
And this is the inside of the November box.
As you can see they pretty much arrive looking exactly the same each month.
For the month of October, here is what I received:
I actually really loved both pairs of earrings. Unfortunately they were both stud closures, and I can’t wear those. But at the end of the day that is fine. I got this subscription to review, and I have so many earrings. I gifted the red pair to one of the besties who I do steampunk with. Its kind of perfect for that kind of look. And the other pair I will also gift to someone or sell on my poshmark.
And now lets look at what was inside the November Box:
These earrings are on French hooks, so I can actually wear them. So off to a great start for November. I did like the designs, and I will definitely wear them out. But I think I liked the designs in the October box more.
I think this is a decent box for the jewelry lover. It’s certainly a good value. And I really think it would make a nice gift. I don’t really have any complaints. I felt like the whole process went smoothly and everything was shipped on time. Sometimes that is a big issue, especially for subscription boxes.
If you like the idea of this subscription box, but it’s not quite what you are looking for, here is a brief list of other boxes that may interest you.
Mint Mongoose – Must-have jewelry — your choice of silver, rose gold, or gold — delivered to you, every month!
Emma & Chloe – A surprise piece of French designer jewelry at your doorstep every month!
Today’s post won’t be anything terribly long. I just wanted to remind everyone that during this Holiday season that is all about giving, its important to also give something to yourself. Be kind to yourself and give yourself some love and forgiveness.
There is often lots of pressure on us, especially us ladies to be perfect. There is always lots to do during the Holidays. But no one is perfect, and that is okay. Allow yourself forgiveness for not being the utter ideal of feminine or masculine perfection.
There are all kinds of stresses for people this time of year. Maybe your like me and love the Holidays but the weather puts a lot of stress on you. Maybe you are like some of my friends and have social anxiety and just find the parties too stressful. Maybe you are like the majority of people and you have family that are assholes. No matter what your stress may be, be kind to yourself and know you are not alone. You are enough as you are.
I put together a short list of resources that may offer you some help in dealing with the stress you are feeling.
Even as a little kid giving to others has always given me great joy. As an adult I still have the joy of giving in my heart, and I think our society would be so much better off if we taught people how to foster that. I know so many people, including some who I am very close to, who get grumpy around the holidays and express that they feel it’s a burden to have to buy others gifts.
Now I am of the mind that if you feel obligated it is no longer a gift, it’s an obligation. Also, there are so many ways to give, and many of them have nothing to do with spending money or even giving physical items.
So in the spirit of fostering the joy of giving, I want to spend the month of December concentrating on giving. I will sharing all sorts of things pertaining to giving both here on the blog and on my social media. And I wanted to get this started off by giving back to all of you. I have a few different giveaways planned. But I wanted to start here on the blog. I thought for a while about what I wanted to do a giveaway with, and I decided I really wanted to give you all the chance to try the dress I recently shared.
The winner will be able to choose the size and color option out of the current available offerings.
I will also be giving away to a second place winner a sheet mask set.
The second place winner will receive all of the sheet masks pictured above. They are a combination of various masks I have been sent boxes of to try this year, as well as a few I couldn’t use because of my allergy (no point in letting them go to waste when one of you lovelies could use them).
Both of these giveaways are open to residents of the US, Canada, and the UK. (Unfortunately I can not guarantee delivery before Christmas for the Canada and UK entries)
I am doing my giveaways a little different this year, trying to make it simple for all of you. I am not using the app this year, you don’t have to sign into anything this year. So how do you enter?
Simply leave a comment on this post telling me something that is on your Christmas wish list this year. For an extra entry share this post on Facebook or Twitter (your post must be a public post so I can verify the entry) and tag My Plus Size Life in your post. Make sure to leave a way for me to contact you in your comment if you are the winner. This can be an email address, a social media handle, etc.)
You will have until the 14th of December to enter, and a winner will be announced on the 15th. If there is no way to contact the name drawn or if I don’t have a response within 48 hours a new winner will be drawn.
I will also be doing some giveaways on my various social media accounts over the next week. So make sure you are following me on all of those.
