What It’s Like To Be A Fat, Sick, Woman In The US – Part 3: Can Anyone Hear Me

So far we have talked about why I wanted to speak about this subject in part 1, and my diagnoses (or essentially why this is so relevant and important to me) in part 2. If you missed those posts, you can find them here at Part 1 and Part 2.

Today I wanted to talk to you about something that ties this together. While it’s not the only issue, its something I see as one of the big issues that women, people who are overweight, and people with disabilities deal with to one degree. In one way or another they all, in a sense, have their voice taken away. What do I mean by that? People constantly talk over you, they put words in your mouth, and they often think they know what is better for you than you do.

Lets talk about the concept that I think most people will be familiar with first. Unless you are living under a rock you have heard of the concept of mansplaining. As a matter of fact I recently had a man interrupt a conversation I was having with someone else so he could mansplain mansplaining. It’s really not uncommon for women to feel like men, or even on occasion other women, are taking their voices away. Now if you feel you have never experienced mansplaining, then I am over-joyed for you, but you are in the minority.

But it’s not just by mansplaining that we have our voices taken away as women. A ten minute look at congress will show you a large group of men who think they know what is best for women and their bodies. From dictating what birth control health care will cover to deciding what choices are right for a woman’s body, they think they know what is best for us. They put in place laws that limit our choices and effectively take out voices away from us.

But what about people with disabilities? How are their voices stolen? Before I go any further I want to preface this part by saying this is based on my own personal experiences. I have spoken to other people with various disabilities, and this seems to be most, but not all, of what I am going to talk about is more of an issue for people like me who suffer mainly from invisible illnesses.

Here are some of the things I experience on a regular basis as a disabled person. It’s not unusual for people to question if I am really sick since they can’t see anything wrong with me. If they aren’t questioning my health itself then I typically get unsolicited advice on how I should be dealing with my health or people questioning if I have done enough to try to get better. Now sometimes these things are said out of a good place, and I try to recognize that. But the idea that I somehow wouldn’t try, or at least investigate, everything that is available to me to get better is a little absurd. But when I tell people as much, but in a nice way of course, I get incredulous looks or responses of how I must have tried something different because their friends daughters best friends sister has the same thing as me and it worked for them.

But it truly goes beyond just the average person on the street that you deal with. You would think that the treatment you get from a doctor would be better. Sometimes it is easier with a doctor, but a lot of the time it’s not. Doctors aren’t always fully trained on every illness, they are also sometimes directed in a certain way by state laws or hospital policies that may not actually be for the best of the patient. And really they are just people and make mistakes too.

I shared in my previous post that I actually suffer from several chronic pain conditions, including fibromyalgia. In the state I live in there are still doctors who don’t believe it exists, and I have been told this by a couple of doctors before. One took it so far as to tell me he thought I was just being lazy. But then if you do find a doctor who will treat you and believes you, if you dare state that you know what medicine works for you, then you are treated like a drug addict.

Being fat (insert plus size, curvy, pleasantly plump, Rubenesque, or whatever you want to call it here) in the US, and maybe other places too, comes with a lot of those same sorts of examples. People make unwelcome comments about how they think you look, what you’re wearing and whether they think its appropriate for someone your size, and especially about what you are eating and whether they think you should be or not.

People really seem to think the only reason someone might be fat is because they don’t know how to make good life decisions. Or maybe they think we are too stupid to know if you overeat that it will cause you to gain weight. And so by telling us these things, they are then going to be this awesome hero that sweeps in and saves the day. But in reality life isn’t that simple. There are tons of reasons someone might be overweight, and at least for the majority of people I know, overeating is not what caused them to gain weight.

And again, you would think that you would have better treatment from a doctor, but in my experience that is not the case. You would be surprised at how many doctors just make that assumption that because you are over weight you automatically are going to have high cholesterol, diabetes, etc.. I have actually had a doctor say to me, “No, you’re too fat to have better numbers on your cholesterol and blood sugar than me. This can’t be right”. And it’s not just rude statements like that, I could probably live with those if I felt I was getting the best medical treatment possible. But the shear waste of time that is involved with these preconceived notions is unacceptable.

When I was at my worst, health wise, it often meant going to the doctor at least once a week. It took forever to find doctors who were giving me quality care and not just focusing on my weight. It’s not helpful to go to the doctor and have your blood drawn by the same doctor at every visit simply because the doctor can’t get beyond their own personal biases. Now if you are relatively healthy, and you only go to the doctor once a year for an annual physical, then its acceptable. But let it sink in, I literally had doctors who wanted to draw my blood on a weekly basis, just because they couldn’t believe it was possible for me to have healthy levels of blood sugar and cholesterol.

Now maybe you have read all of this and you don’t understand why I am saying people are taking our voices away. It really comes down to this, I think anytime someone doesn’t listen to you, thinks they know what is better for you, doesn’t respect your opinions or the facts, then they are essentially taking your voice away. Whether someone’s intentions are good or not is besides the point. And women, fat people, and disabled people are not the only ones who experience this, I think anyone in a minority group or oppressed group experience these things as well.

I would love to hear what some of you have experienced yourself. Tell me in the comments how people have been trying to take your voice away. Or if you want to disagree with me leave that in the comments too. All comments will be approved unless they are disrespectful or of a bullying nature.

Product Review – LOMALUX Dandruff Pill

LOMLUX Dandruff Pill

LOMLUX Dandruff Pill

Today I wanted to talk to you about a product that may not interest all of you, but some of you may be very interested. I had hoped to give you a full review, but due to all of the health issues I have been dealing with I am constantly running behind on my blog post and I didn’t want to put this off. So you may end up with a follow-up post on this or at least some post on social media letting you know what I think later. Currently I am only a couple of weeks into taking this. I think a month to a month and a half is really needed to give a full accurate opinion.

So lets talk about what this is. The product is the LOMALUX Dandruff Pill. It is a homeopathic medication (I will talk about what that means in a bit) designed to temporarily relieve the symptoms of dandruff. It is a combination of seven active minerals. It is lactose free, gluten free, and vegan. It does have a warning on the box to not take this if you have kidney disease, under fifty pounds, or breast feeding. So those are some things to consider before taking this. Also, the product claims have not been reviewed by the FDA. I personally don’t care about that factor, but I know some people do, and I want you to be fully informed when I review products like this.

I was interested in reviewing this product because I do have many dandruff symptoms as a part of my contact dermatitis. Ironically I can’t use most dandruff shampoos because they include ingredients that I am allergic to and would trigger my contact dermatitis, in effect causing more dandruff. The couple I have found in Korean brands that do work for me are so expensive I can’t afford them often. I thought if this dandruff pill worked it might be a great alternative option.

Before I go any further on my thoughts about this product and any results I have seen lets talk about what homeopathic medicine is. While homeopathic medicine is considered to be in the field of natural remedies it is not the same as vitamins and minerals people are more commonly familiar with. Homeopathy is based on the idea that like cures like, so a chemical that causes an illness will cure the exact same illness, for the example caffeine would cure sleep loss. Except with homeopathy the thought is the cure needs to be diluted down, and the more diluted it is the more effective the cure. I tend to think of homeopathy as the naturopaths version of a vaccine without needles. If you would like to find out more information on homeopathy works there is a very well explained article on WebMD that does a great job of giving both the perspective of people for and against the use of homeopathic remedies.

My personal experience with homeopathy prior to this had been limited but good experiences, so I was very open to trying the LOMALUX Dandruff Pills. So let’s get on with more about the product and what I have thought so far.

Here is what the actual bottle look like. I have made the pictures clickable so if you want to see the pictures larger to read the ingredient list or the directions.

As I said earlier I have only been taking these for a couple of weeks now, so what I can say on how well they work is minimal. I do feel like I am seeing some results. However at this point it is hard to tell if it’s the pills or I am just in less contact with things that re setting my contact dermatitis off.

While I haven’t found the pills to have a bad taste or cause me heartburn, there have been some things I found challenging in taking these. First off you are supposed to take these first thing in the morning or right before bed on an empty stomach, and with nothing but water within an hour of taking the pills. This is a big challenge for me since I typically have a cup of coffee as soon as I get up in the morning, and at night right before bed is when I take all of my medicine, some of which requires I eat a little something with it. But also there is the size and texture of the pills. I have never been one of those people who have had a difficult time taking pills, even if they are large. But let me show you what we are actually talking about:

Pill size of the LOMALUX Dandruff Pills

They are quite large and have a chalky texture. I found it hard to get them to go down without sticking in my throat. I definitely can not take more than one of these at a time, and I have to be very careful how I swallow when I do.

One other thing to be aware of if you are interested in taking these, the dosage is based on your weight. This makes sense for a lot of things, but with this it can lead to some pretty large amounts of pills you are taking. I think most of us that are plus size are going to the categories of taking either six, eight, or ten pills a day.

So at this point your probably wondering if its worth taking the pills. Honestly, I can’t answer that for you, I can only tell you what I think for myself. And yes, as long as I continue to see improvements in condition, I absolutely think it is worth it.

If you are interested in trying this product out yourself you can find it on the LOMALUX website. You can also find it in the vitamin isle at select Walgreens.

I did receive this complimentary bottle from the company for review purposes. However, all opinions are my own.

Tell me in the comments below if you have tried any homeopathic treatments before and what your experience with it is.

Hidden Gems Of Amazon – V28 Over Sized Maxi Casual Beach Dress

Hidden Gems of Amazon

Hidden Gems of Amazon

Guess whose back, back again? …. Okay so I’m not the Slim Shady, not even close. But I do think that you should tell a friend. All joking aside, it really has been a hot minute since I have done a fashion post.  April was the last time to be exact. And if you have been hanging in there with me while I have been recovering from health issues, I really appreciate it. And if you have been reading any of my insanely long health related posts recently, then I really appreciate you that much more.

But let’s get to what you are really here for, and that would be fashion and fit information on that fashion. If you are following me on Instagram or Twitter there is a chance you already saw some of the preview pictures of this dress and necklace. So far the feedback has been you guys really like the look of this dress. So here is the details.

Plus size maxi found on Amaon

This is from a seller going by V28 on Amazon. This is their Oversized Maxi Casual Beach Dress. If you go to their page you will notice they have it listed with three other styles of maxi dresses. This particular one is marked as the Flower 5 pattern.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The straps are adjustable in length. They are very thin though, so wearing a regular bra with straps is not going to be possible unless you don’t care if they are super noticeable. Now it is listed as beach wear, so I personally plan on throwing it over a strapless swimsuit I have. For the purposes of these pictures I paired it with a strapless bra that fits very similar to how the bathing suit top I have fits me.

Side view of the V28 maxi dress

Let’s talk about the sizing and fit. I ordered the size indicated by the size chart that would fit me best in their brand, that being a 20/22. Typically in most plus size brand I order size 2X or 20W, so their sizing was pretty on par. I do think the sizing was accurate. The fit was good with the exception of the chest sort of. It does fit me in the chest, but just barely. Not because it’s too tight, but just not enough material to cover everything. I would definitely have to say if you are in DDD cup like me, or larger, this might not be the right dress for you. But if you remember I did say they have two other designs, and those have much more fabric in on the top. But then again, maybe you are comfortable with showing a lot of side boob.

Their size range is pretty good. Sizes start at 4/6 and go up to a 32/34, and the best part is the price is the same no matter what size you are ordering. It’s a nice thrifty $12.99 for these dresses. And it has free prime shipping. It seems like a lot of sizes are sold out in this particular dress, but if you check each of the patterns I think they have everyone’s size left in something.

Just so you can check if they will have a size that works for you, here is their size chart:

US4/ 6 (Asia tag M) waist: 42.5″ bust: 34.6″ hip: 42.5″ dress length: 59″
US 8/10(Asia tag L) waist: 44″ bust:37.4″ hip:46.4″ dress length:59″
US 12/14(Asia tag XL) waist: 45.6″ bust:40.1″ hip:50.3″ dress length:59″
US 16/18 (Asia tag XXL) waist:47.2″ bust:44″ hip:54.3″ dress length: 59″
US 20/22(Asia tag 3XL) waist:27.5″ bust:48.8″ hip:58.2″ dress length: 59″
US 24/26(Asia tag 4XL) waist:31.4″ bust: 52.7″ hip:62.2″ dress length: 59″
US28/30(Asia tag 5XL) waist:35.4″ bust:56.6″ hip:66.1″ dress length: 59″
US32/34(Asia tag 6XL) waist:39.3″ bust:60.6″ hip:70″ dress length: 59″

You might notice the waist measurement seems really small. I am pretty sure this is an under-bust measurement and not a waist measurement. In the 20/22 I  ordered it says the waist is 27.5″, but my waist is 42.5″. Yet you can see that the dress fits me and it’s not tight at the waist.

V28 maxi dress, hidden gem of amazon and accessories

I found it really easy to accessorize with this dress. I threw on a pair of my favorite mirrored cat eye sun glasses. I also put on one of my newest necklaces, and what is my latest obsession. Every unicorn needs this necklace in their life. Its the iridescent leaf pendant necklace from a seller called BOTIQUELOVIN. The necklace is available in four other metallic shades and it sells for $9.99 and free prime shipping. All of the color options are pretty, but I really just can’t put in words how beautiful I think this iridescent shade is.

Here is a closer look at the necklace itself.

Irridescent leaf pendant necklace

The picture really doesn’t do it justice. I tried to show the color shift. It goes from purple to red, to green to gold.

I did get all of the pieces shown here at discounted prices for review purposes. However I was never asked to write this blog post, this was purely my own thoughts and ideas.

Tell me in the comments below what wardrobe or jewelry piece you are currently obsessed with. If you have a suggestion for what you would like me to try on future Hidden Gems of Amazon posts don’t forget to leave those in the comments as well.
