All About Double Cleansing

What it is: Double cleansing refers to using an oil-based cleanser to remove makeup, oil, and sunscreen, then cleansing again with a water-based cleanser to remove sweat and dirt.

Double cleansing just might be the best thing you can do for your skin  If you’re using some form of makeup remover in conjunction with a cleanser each night, you’re already on your way!

Here’s why you need to start ASAP:

  • Makeup and sunscreen that’s left on the skin can:
    • clog your pores and cause acne breakouts
    • cause irritations
    • cause discoloration
    • turn into a breeding ground for bacteria
  • The rest of your skincare routine is, dare we say, useless without a clean canvas!
  • Your makeup remover wipes are just pushing the dirt around.

You should be double cleansing if you wear sunscreen (so everyone, right?), wear makeup, live/work in the city, or you get oily throughout the day.

If your skin type is normal, you wear no makeup at all, and you rarely venture outdoors, you’ll probably be alright with some water

Step One:

Makeup remover wipes are great for on the go and certainly can be used to take off some eye and lip makeup, but for the most part, you’ll want to ditch them or follow up with an oil cleanser. A wipe might just sweep the surface but an oil cleanser can dig deep into the pores to clear out everything!

Cleansing oils are very watery, but gentle on the skin. Cleansing balms are solid (aka travel-friendly) and more heavy-duty.

For both, you’ll want to apply to dry skin. Gently massage the product onto your skin in circular motions. You can safely use oil cleansers on your eyes as long as it doesn’t trickle in. Don’t forget to take the product below your jawline where there may be foundation

To remove, just rinse off with lukewarm water until it runs clear and move onto Step 2!

Step Two:

Water-based cleansers dissolve water-based impurities, such as sweat, dirt, and leftover residue from step one.

For this step, it’s important you pick a cleanser  that will clean without drying out your skin. A squeaky clean canvas is not good and a stripping cleanser can pull too much moisture away. Before trying out a new cleanser, check its pH level (with something like this). You want something with a pH lower than 5.5.

  • Foam Cleansers – These tend to be most stripping, but also the most popular because of the “clean, bubbly” foam. They’re very gentle on the skin as long as you pick on that’s low on the pH scale!
  • Gel Cleansers – These don’t sud up as much, but they do clean well. They’re also refreshing on the skin because of the gel texture.
  • Powder Cleansers – These are the most travel-friendly as they aren’t liquid at all. To use, just add water to create a nice lather. You’ll get a gentle exfoliation out of it too!

You’ll want to lather the product up on wet skin and rinse off with lukewarm water. When rinsing, splash water gently on your face so you’re not rubbing! Pat your skin dry with a towel and you’re all done

Where does cleansing water fit?

Let’s be real- cleansing waters will not replace your cleansing oil or balm. They’re great if you want to clear off some sweat after a workout or remove some makeup prior to cleansing, but that’s all they should be expect to do.

TL;DR

  • Start double-cleansing.
  • Oil-based cleansers remove makeup and sunscreen. Water-based cleansers remove dirt and sweat.
  • Liquid oil cleansers are messy but good for sensitive and dry skin. Solid balm cleansers are best for removing makeup and traveling.
  • Massage oil-based cleansers on dry skin and water-based cleansers on wet skin.
  • Don’t worry about the oiliness of your first step cleanser- that’ll wash away with your second cleanser!
  • Definitely double cleanse at night, but it’s not necessary to do so in the morning as well. You can use your second-step cleanser or skip it altogether and just rinse with water.

Soft Silicone Unicorn Phone Case

Some people might say a stylish phone case is the only phone accessory you need. And since unicorns are all the rage right now, they might be right with this phone case. My old phone case was wearing out, so I just got this one, and I think its super cute. The link above is to the one that fits my phone, a Samsung Galaxy S5. They are also available for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Samsung Galaxy Note 5, LG G Stylo/LG LS770/G4 Stylus/G4 Note, iPhone 5 / 5S Case, iPhone 6 Plus / 6s Plus, and iPhone 7. Depending on which phone you have there is also several color options available.

GUESS Flowers Necklace

Another top trend of the spring and summer is denim and white paired together. But what kind of accessories do you pair with that? Try this flower statement necklace from Guess. I don’t have this exact necklace, but I have something very similar that you will most likely see in a fashion post sometime soon.

Denim Dot Soft Headwrap

While we are talking denim and white accessories, why not try out this really cute headband. I love the vintage feel with the bow and the adorable heart print. This will definitely be on my list to buy soon.

Tell me in the comments below what’s on your must have list for this summer.

What It’s Like To Be A Fat, Sick, Woman In The US – Part 1 Why I Am Speaking Out About My Disabilities

I have wavered back and forth about doing this post for the last month or so. If you have followed me here on the blog for any amount of time you know I have health issues, but you probably don’t know to what degree they truly affect me. And to be honest even most people who know me in person don’t know how affected I am by my health, and how much of a struggle it is at times just to live.

You may also have noticed that since around Christmas time I have significantly slowed down, both here on the blog and on social media. Unfortunately that has been not of choice, but out of necessity. I have had moments where I have done more, either because I had a break and started feeling better, or out of obligation I pushed myself past the point I should have and worked anyways.

Online Fitness, Yoga and Cooking Videos

Please understand, the things I just said and all the things I am about to share with you are not for pity. I am absolutely not sharing this for pity, nor do I want anyone’s sorrow or pity. But under the current governments administration it is very clear that I as a fat, disabled, woman am being treated as a person that has no value and in many ways am under attack.

Because of the nature of my blog I think that most of the people who visit here will already identify with being a woman, especially a fat women. And even if you are, for the most part healthy, you can probably still appreciate the extra frustration that comes with dealing with healthcare. All the extra time spent talking about your weight, even when it has nothing to do with what you are there for. Or the down talking you get for just being a woman. But there is a special sort of hell that you go through when you add having disabilities into the picture. Part of that is because when you have the types of disabilities I have, essentially your job becomes going to the doctor. And its ridiculous how long it can take to find a doctor who will simply take you serious enough to actually look at you like a person and try to find out what’s wrong rather than just going with “it’s because you are fat”.

Ultimately I suppose I have a few goals in writing this post. I hope maybe for those of you who are completely healthy to perhaps gain some understanding of the people in your life who are disabled. I would love for people to understand how the healthcare changes massively affect people with disabilities and how congress trying to get rid of the ADA(American’s With Disabilities Act) at the same time makes it feel like a war against the disabled. And more than anything else, I want other people who are going through similar things to know they aren’t alone.

So in the beginning I mentioned that I struggled with whether or not I wanted to write this post. Obviously I did decide to write the post, but I decided I wanted to make it as thorough as possible. Since I foresee this becoming very long and possibly overwhelming, I decided it was best to break this into multiple posts. In this first post I really just wanted to share why I wanted to talk about this topic and what I hoped to accomplish from it. In the next post I want to talk about my own diagnoses, what difficulties they actually cause for me, and under Trump’s healthcare bill how many would be preexisting conditions.

I do plan on having several parts to this, but I am not sure how many exactly. I think this will be done when I feel like its done. If you have any questions or topics you want me to address in the next part, please feel free to post them in the comments or go to my contact page and send me a message.
