My Steampunk Circus Halloween Costume

A close up of me and Wonder Woman (aka Jenny) at the party.

It Halloween season and I have already been to my first party. I wanted to make sure I got this post up, because there is still time to get things ordered for anyone that is only going to dress up for actual Halloween. This year I did a play on a steampunk costume. I really like steampunk, but I prefer feminine colors so I made mine a steampunk circus costume.

Hanging out with Mideval Wonder Woman (aka my bestie Jenny) and a Zombie Bride (aka my other bestie Jenna)

To get the clothes to achieve this look:

The Hat – I made mine and will be selling some in the future, but until if you are not the DIY type you can find similar here.

The Bodysuit – I bought mine from Lane Bryant’s a couple of years ago, and while it is no longer available they have one that will work just as well and probably keep you warmer. You can find it here.

The Corset – I bought mine years ago at a Cacique store, so they obviously no longer have it. However, Hips % Curves has one that is very similar and will work perfectly for this look. You can find it here.

The Gloves – I purchased on eBay. You can get them here.

The Petticoat – I bought this from Hips & Curves a couple of years ago for another costume, but they still have it. It is their Ruffled Two Layer Petticoat. You can find it here.

The Garter Belt – I purchased mine from Lane Bryant’s a few years ago, and while they no longer have the exact style I have on you can find a similar style here.

The Thigh High Pantyhose – I purchased these from Hips & Curves specifically for this costume. You can find them here.

The lighting really washed out a lot of the makeup I had on, but if your interested in how to do a steampunk look checkout my Halloween Inspiration board on Pinterest. And if enough people show interest I will come back and do a step by step instruction post on how to do the makeup look.

Do you have a great look for Halloween? Please share it with us. Send it in a message to me on Facebook with your name and some info on your costume and I will either post in on the Facebook page or it may even end up here on the blog. I want to see everyone’s creativity.

Breaking The Rules On My Date With ModCloth

Let me be the first to step up and say, I fully accept and admit I can be very stubborn at times. And if you tell me I can’t do something, most likely I will try my best to do it. That being said, I also think that sometimes some of our biggest faults can also be our biggest strengths if used in the right way. Because you know if some tells me not to jump off a bridge, obviously its not a great thing for me to try and jump off a bridge. But if someone tells me I can’t do something just because I happen to be a girl or plus size and I turn around and prove them wrong, well chalk one up for women’s rights and body positivity everywhere.

So a while back, if you follow me on Facebook or know me in person, I posted about wanting to buy some dresses from Mod Cloth for some special Occasions that were coming up. I received a handful of responses on Facebook as well as a few in person. Unanimously there was one dress in the group everyone told me they thought I should not get because of the strips. Because you know, if there was ever one thing your told as a fat girl is you can’t wear stripes, which I have never bought into anyways. So me being stubborn, you know I bought that dress.

I had a snafu when ordering this dress. I ordered by Mod Cloth’s size chart and it just didn’t fit. It was too large by two sizes. Since it was on clearance it normally isn’t suppose to be exchangeable. But I have to say the folks at Mod Cloth were so nice and let me exchange since it was my first time ordering, and I didn’t understand how their size charts worked. This particular dress ended up running true to size, and you should order what you would from Lane Bryant or Torrid.

I really loved the way this dress felt on. It had a very satiny feel to the fabric that made it seem so luxurious. And my husband was absolutely over the moon about it. He probably told me I looked beautiful four or five times during dinner than night.

Don’t be afraid to break the rules in fashion. Wear what you want, when you want. I want to hear from all of you. What was the last rule you broke?

Lets Talk About Trolls

Internet-Troll

Yes its October, and every October we start thinking about Halloween, candy, and costumes. And given the title you probably think we are going to talk about some Harry Potter themed costume or maybe something related to the latest animated film The Box Trolls. But that’s not it. We are going to talk about something much uglier, something that effects us not just in October. We are talking Internet Trolls.

Fact is, if you have spent any amount of time online, most likely you have come across the dreaded internet trolls. The plus size community has more than their fair share of trolls. So far I have been fortunate that my blog and Facebook fan page has not been targeted yet. While I hope that that run of luck continues, I won’t hold my breath. But I can promise you that I will be diligent and hopefully keep it under control.

Now to the point of this piece. If you are like me when you run across these offensive creatures, you can’t help but wonder “why?”. Why do they join groups they obviously have no interest in? And more than that, who has that much time to waist? Apparently scientist are now asking these exact same questions. Recently the prestigious Psychology Today published an article on their website all about Internet Trolls.

The research used shows a correlation between internet trolling and some very dark personality traits. Unfortunately, we aren’t offered more advice on how to handle these folks other than just ignore them (you were right mom), but I personally feel a little better and maybe a little vindicated having proof that there is something seriously wrong with these people. To read the article for yourself you can find it here at Internet Trolls Are Narcissists, Psychopaths, and Sadists.

I would love to here what you guys think? When and on what site was the last time you had a run in with an internet troll? Do you have any tips for dealing with them?
